Good credit can save you thousands over the course of your mortgage. "Types of credit used" makes up 10% of your credit score. Lenders like to see a diverse mix of credit accounts on your report to demonstrate that you can be responsible with different types of credit. ... Revolving accounts are accounts that allow you to borrow, repay and re-borrow up to a specified limit. Credit cards and lines of credit are revolving accounts. Installment accounts do not allow reborrowing and have a specified interest rate, term and payment amount. Car loans, mortgages and personal loans are installment accounts. As this factor only makes up 10% of your credit score, it is unlikely that obtaining an unnecessary loan to increase your score is worthwhile. The cost of the loan most likely ourweighs the benefits to your credit. However, if you only have installment accounts, it may be prudent to obtain a credit card. Walking into 2021 like I’m Abbi Stevenson. I’m a wife, mom and licensed Mortgage Agent. When my oldest kids were 3 and 5, I went through a divorce. The most important thing for me was maintaining the only home my children had ever known. I had been a stay-at-home mom for 5 years with one credit card to my name and embarrassingly little knowledge of my own finances. I was terrified of losing my home. My mortgage specialist was the one person to give me hope during an incred...ibly scary and difficult time. I knew I wanted to be that person for other people. I took a job at a bank and worked my way up from teller to financial advisor. I provided investment advice and guidance about budgeting but what I loved was mortgages. That was where I could really make a difference. I helped a client avoid bankruptcy by refinancing his mortgage. I helped young couples purchase their first homes. And I got to tell a newly single mother that she wouldn’t have to sell her house. But I also had to say no an awful lot. So, after the birth of my youngest son, I decided to become a Mortgage Agent. As a mortgage agent I have access to a multitude of lenders who give me the ability to help more people and say no WAY less.
