4th of July 1997 - Mars Pathfinder lands on Mars 23 years ago today with impeccable timing on US Independence Day, a plucky little NASA space probe named Pathfinder hurtled though the Martian atmosphere carrying its cargo, the tiny rover Sojourner. This was going to be no ordinary landing for the first successful lander on mars for 20 years It was in for a bumpy ride but fortunately that was the plan. Once the parachutes on the lander had fully deployed, out popped enormous... airbags and as the probe neared the surface, the parachutes were cut away. Yet again, the probe was in free-fall. But it was not long before the padded lander hit Martian soil and bounced over 15 meters into the air. It kept on bouncing at least another 15 times before finally coming to rest. The following day the little two foot, long 6-wheeled rover Sojourner trundled down its ramp and became the real star of the show in the first big planetary landing of the internet age. Images were released on the web to an expectant public who, for the first time, could download images practically in real-time. Sojourner had a maximum speed of 1 centimetre per second, so this was no joy ride, but it drove 100 meters and took 550 images over the 83 days it was in operation - and it was only designed to work for 7 days! Pathfinder and Sojourner blazed the trail for the future of robot exploration of Mars. The next time rovers landed, they were almost the size of cars and came as a pair. #NASA #Mars #pathfinder #sojourner #history #4thofJuly

This is it! The year's biggest Super Moon is coming on April 7 and 8! Also called the Pink Moon, Grass Moon, or Egg Moon, it can look as big as 14% and as bright as 30% more than a Micro Moon. Get your binoculars, telescopes, or simply your DSLR to enjoy this magnificent view!
