"Nothing can escape a black hole, not even light"... right? In 1974, Stephen Hawking showed in a calculation involving general relativity, quantum mechanics and thermodynamics, that black holes do in fact emit light. This effect, now known as "Hawking Radiation", causes the black hole to slowly lose mass until it completely evaporates! Want to find out more about Hawking's discoveries?
