Announcing the Globe at Night campaign dates for 2021! For anyone who might like to pre-plan events, we hope this helps. The April campaign perfectly coincides ...this year with dates for IDA's International Dark-Sky Week! In the USA, the campaign dates coincide with Mother's Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving. (And for a sneek peak, the last campaign which spills over to 2022, encompasses Christmas and New Year's! Think Great Globe at Night Backyard Campaign like the bird counts at Christmas!). And don't forget Pi Day! With what holidays in your country do any of the campaigns coincide? See more

Get ready for a special Globe at Night Challenge this month! This month’s Globe at Night campaign, from 9 September to 18 September, is special because it takes... place just before the autumnal equinox. Thanks to the equinox, there are equal day and night hours in both the northern and southern hemisphere, meaning everyone everywhere will have the same amount of nighttime hours in which to make observations. Plus this is a great family event in your backyard, or school extra-credit assignment! Observers are asked to go out more than an hour or later after sunset (but before the Moon has risen), and let their eyes adjust to the dark for about 10-15 minutes. Then observers in the north will look at the constellation Cygnus the Swan, and those in the south will look at the constellation Sagittarius the Archer. We hope to improve the number of observations taken all over the world. If you either look on our interactive map (www.globeanight.org/map/) or our regional map (http://www.globeatnight.org/mapapp/) and see few observations in your location, please help out. And if you look and do see observations, it is always great to take more for continual monitoring. For inspiration check out the 7600 observations made from Australia this year, including 6700 on one night when the country participated in a World Record attempt! It's easy to get involved all you need is computer or smart phone and to follow these six simple steps here: https://www.globeatnight.org/6-steps.php.

Sky watch alert Don’t miss your chance to view Mars rising in the eastern sky in the late evening! Look towards the Pisces constellation and you will spot the... planet, which looks like a bright star with an orange hue. Send us pictures of your view for a chance to be featured on our social media accounts!
