Intermediate athletes have developed appropriate levels of prerequisite general strength with moderate rep ranges over a span of close to, or exceeding, five years of training at Athletes Fuel. General strength still remains a priority (#1 in increasing power/speed with this age group), but there is now more focus on developing maximal strength via more doses of lower reps ranges and heavier loads in key exercises. We start to really see athletes get strong, particularly in supported single leg. The end goal is faster and more powerful. Show me a strong, developing athlete that didn’t get noticeably faster and more powerful - I haven’t. #AFlete @grayson.ladd (@windsorspitfireshockey) #FUELHockey #FuelEDU

With developing athletes; particularly those in their early to mid teen years with a very low training age, adaptation is still very easy. They can handle a little bit of everything each training day, so a more generalized theme each day is the most appropriate choice. They still need to learn how to train and develop movement quality through basic variations, simple progressive overload, and consistency. This will yield the best results over the short-term and long-term. #FuelEDU #AFlete @dakota.m44

My trainer back home put a good program in place where we got stuff done. We worked really hard for four solid months before I came. I was skating a lot, so I feel pretty good.
Condors on the board first again thanks to this Seth Griffith beauty.

Youth athlete training focus - instilling proper training habits, teaching movement patterns, repetitions (not sets/reps), but most importantly, making it FUN. #AFlete @caderm.4 #FUELHockey #FuelEDU #virtual #homegym
Although hockey is a high amplitude/impulse sport, and correlates more with the rate of contraction vs. the rate of relaxation because of the relatively short sprint durations displayed in the sport, I think some form of maxV sprinting is important - albeit in very small doses and when the nervous system is best prepared. I think it’s important that these players feel what it’s like to move faster than their sport typically allows them, with a turnover rate that occurs at a much faster rate than seen in their sport - emphasizing the rate of relaxation. #AFletes TJ Brodie (@mapleleafs), Seth Griffith (@edmontonoilers @condors), @grayson.ladd (@windsorspitfireshockey) #FUELHockey #FuelEDU
#AFlete @pegg_emma has signed her National Letter of Intent and has accepted a full athletic scholarship to @maryland.tfxc. I still remember her first day at #TheFUEL when she was a 12 year-old. The journey watching an athlete grow from a youth to the big stage is one of my favourite parts of this job. Canada’s fastest 2003-born female 800m runner is going to take the @bigten conference by storm.

MAROONS SIGN SPENCE Craig Spence is an elite Defenseman in our league and we are fortunate to welcome him back to our organization. " Craig’s ability to be mob...ile and to get involved offensively on the rush and in the offensive zone makes him very difficult to defend. He is long and defends well. He will raise the level of our entire team with the way that he competes. Craig will be a leader for our group." Tyler Roeszler"
#AFlete @ayden.blain 1-leg squat 260x5 (175 BW, 85 external load). Impressive combo of strength and stability from a 16 year-old. Never a bad day at the office and no excuses ever made. Every training day is attacked with effort and purpose. One of the most consistent to ever do it at #TheFUEL.
Abdominal work - stabilize the spine, maintain alignment/relationship between pelvis and spine, and prevent excessive stress of the pelvis during movement of the extremities. The key is to emphasize trunk stability with a neutral spine while stressing mobility at the hips. The lateral wide stance anti-rotation press hits on both. #AFlete @mcfadden_35 @laurierwomensrugby #FuelEDU
With developing athletes, strength training is also speed training. Improve strength = improve force output; leading to increased stride length in the acceleration phase. I guess lifting weights is fun as well, eh @brennadittmer? #AFlete @swwildcats #FuelEDU

The second cycle of the hockey off-season program is underway and it feels a lot like a regular off-season at #TheFUEL. High-level players still here that normally arent at this time of year. #AFlete Seth Griffith prepares for his 8th NHL/AHL season. #FUELHockey
The longest sprints we did this summer with team sport athletes. They were flying 30m sprints. Thats not very far. Thats the point. #AFletes @denigoure (@attackohl) @kaitlyn_isaac (@cornellwhockey) @dylanschives (@quebec_remparts) #FUELHockey #FuelEDU

Everybody is a rotary athlete it just varies depending on the athlete/sport. Before you ask an athlete to rotate, can they absorb and handle rotation? Strong and stable before expressing power. With rotational med ball throws, too many times people are looking at the upper extremity look at the WHIP OF THE HIP and the back foot. They should both SNAP on follow through. #AFlete @llaprise2427 does an excellent job here. You need to look at what's happening at the feet. When the back foot leaves the ground before the ball is at 90 degrees on the vertical axis, you lose power. #FuelEDU (video recorded before the implementation of the mandatory mask by-law)
Congrats to #AFlete @seth.merritt for being awarded Kent Minor Hockeys Top First Year Young Official award. Are you ready to make the jump to officiate the 2021 Athletes Fuel Cup? #FUELHockey @chathamcobras
80/20. 80% of athletes results from their physical preparation training comes from 20% of what is programmed. Train em like you would a track and field sprinter and youve hit that 80%. Strong. Fast. Powerful. Resilient. #AFlete @thomps_10 @dumenslacrosse
Reactive acceleration. How fast can you react to an external stimulus? Team sports are reactive in nature and this is another way that training can provide transfer to sport. #AFletes #FuelEDU @owenkalp @roreyelson @brayden.degelas @bmckay.22
With my older, more experienced athletes I focus in on the adaptation Im looking to elicit and the means needed to achieve this. Every day has a specific purpose and I only program things that compliment that purpose for the day. We cant have interference from non-complimentary training variables. A day that focuses on impulse (high force/high time) will reflect that in the weight room, acceleration work, jump training, and energy system development. One of those impulse jumps is a split jump. #AFlete @danielfraleigh (@chathammaroonshockey) can haaaaaaang. #FUELHockey #FuelEDU
If its important, we do it often. Acceleration work from a lateral 1/2 kneeling position teaches team sport athletes to produce a lot of force quickly, in a rotational plane at the hip, and a full push through the toes. Lots of transfer here for hockey players and field sport athletes. @jessmcpherson31 @kate.martin04 @_abbystonehouse_ @fiona_waddick4
Tempos to finish an AM lift. Excellent relaxation, rhythm, and upright posture. #AFlete @ayden.blain is an absolute work horse. One of the hardest working athletes Ive ever trained - and he does it so consistently. Hes likely my fastest 16 year-old athlete certainly the strongest and most powerful. Funny how that works.
"I felt pretty good from the get-go." Cam Talbot goes through his game and TJ Brodie breaks down the team's win in Game 3.
The 1-Arm DB Snatch is one of the first Olympic lift variations I introduce to athletes 16 years of age and older who have at least a few years of consistent experience training at #TheFUEL (as long as they have adequate shoulder flexion ROM and no history of shoulder pathology). Its easy to teach and easy for athletes to grasp - I cue jump and throw the weight through the ceiling. Simple. I think its more athletic in nature than some of the other Olympic lift variations (ie. hang clean) because the weight has to travel much further up the chain. This speed-strength type work takes on more of a focus and emphasis in my intermediate athletes programs because at this stage they have a solid base of strength to serve as their foundation. #AFlete @anthonylucarelli81 @chathammaroonshockey @londonknights #FUELHockey
"We showed - even against Winnipeg - that we have a physical team." Rasmus Andersson and TJ Brodie share their thoughts on the Game 1 win.
Accepting and absorbing load. Athletes are good at concentric lifts and ballistic work because it allows them to use their tendons, but they struggle when asked to slow down and accept/absorb load. Thats why I like having eccentric and isometric work programmed - it teaches athletes how to absorb energy instead of just expelling it, and it forces them to produce force with their muscles and just not just their tendons. It also goes a long way in improving overcoming inertia, impulse, and change of direction sprinting. #FuelEDU #AFlete @kaynegagner @charlotterushhockey #FUELHockey

What Ive seen over the years is athletes that possess the highest levels of RELATIVE strength (correlation of strength to body mass) have, for the most part, been the fastest sprinters and skaters. This doesnt always mean they have the highest absolute strength either. Ive had athletes that have fairly high MAX strength not be fast. We all benefit from chasing both (relative strength and max strength), but we are ultimately chasing relative strength in sport performance. We are after strong athletes with low body fat %. Sport is about all aspects of speed and relative strength is a key performance indicator. #AFletes #FuelEDU @tarynjacobs08 @swwildcats @pwhlofficial
