Today we commemorate the first National Day of Truth and Reconciliation. In the spirit of the Truth and Reconciliation Committee’s actions relating to sport and recreation, we share these resources for reflection and further action. Learn about the Tom Longboat Awards, named after the famed distance runner. Since 1999, the Aboriginal Sport Circle have led the recognition of Aboriginal athletes for their outstanding contributions to sport in Canada, after the awards began as ...a government-led initiative in 1951. https://www.aboriginalsportcircle.ca/tom-longboat-awards The Canadian Sport Hall of Fame’s Indigenous Sport Heroes education experience helps share the national story of Indigenous athletes in the history of Canadian sport. https://indigenousheroes.ca/foreword/ Sport For Life created the Indigenous Long-Term Participant Development Pathway that outlines the key elements that need to be considered when planning, developing, and implementing programs for and with Indigenous peoples and communities. https://sportforlife.ca//indigenous-long-term-participant/

Jasmyn McCulloch set one of the 32 new Canadian records established in 2020: During competitions, I usually get worked up and stressed out because of all of the standards, which this has affected me in the past. However, on the day of my record I told myself to forget about everything you can't control and focus on what you can. I trusted my body and when I heard the measurement, I couldn't believe it. It was an amazing feeling and I’m happy that I was able to share that moment with my coaches, teammates and family. More than 30 new Canadian records were set this year. Justyn Knight made his mark indoors: Setting the Canadian record in that race was very special for me. That race was designed to go fast, and it did not disappoint. We had great competitors in the race, so many that there was a little bit of tactics involved, but nonetheless still amounted to be a good run. Continuing our look back at the new Canadian records set this year. Elizabeth Duff was happy to get back on the field of play: I was attending my first meet since COVID-19 hit Canada. I had to make a six-hour drive away from home in order to attend this meet, with the excitement of not seeing my teammates in months in the back of my head. On the long drive the anticipation was building. I was finally able to throw competitively again. We're closing out 2020 with a look at the 32 Canadian records set this year. Malindi Elmore had a Houston Marathon to remember, setting three new Canadian records: "My mindset was to focus on executing a smart and strong race, and I was less focussed on what that outcome would be. I knew if I put it all together over the 42.2 kilometres, that I would have a result I was proud of."
