September 2021 is around the corner! Welcome back to a new school year. For children entering pre-primary and onward, this video is helpful in explaining the building blocks of learning to read. Our team of SLPs is equipped to assist children who may be struggling with phonological awareness skills development. We are offering in-home services with safety precautions in place in addition to telepractice.
Happy Speech-Language Pathologists day to my fellow S-LP colleagues today. Whether in-person or on-screen, we continue to put forth our best animated selves for our awesome kiddos!
Thank You Janice Greenberg! Continuing what matters most in early language development during Covid. The necessity and power of social interactions, safely, and discovering new ways of teaching such as via a caregiver coaching model.
One of my students; so proud of this kiddo!

Some points (from an S-LP) on the progression in developing reading and writing proficiency: 1. Phonological awareness and foundational skills: listening and tapping for the syllables, distinguishing sounds auditorily, rhymes. Think auditory skills even before print mapping. 2. Begin attaching the SOUNDS we say to symbolic LETTERS (graphemes)... 3. Teach consonant and vowel sounds, and show similar patterns systematically and cumulatively. 4. Regular lessons in fair words vs unfair/tricky words that don’t follow 1:1 sound-graphemes. Pick a pattern each week to focus on eg. /igh/ says i. 5. Be sure to have students motorically WRITE words with pencil and paper and say them aloud to best retain and template/map spellings. 6. To retain, students must read these newly acquired words within sentence context. Compose simple sentences with students using the words. Solidify memory of the new word, its meaning, its spelling. 7. Increase phoneme complexity, adding digraphs and consonant blends, cumulatively. 8. Continue to foster confidence in attacking new words and you will soon teach MORPHOLOGY, roots, prefixes and suffixes, for patterns (eg starting simple with plural /s/ means more than one, /ed/ means in the past) and part-word meanings. 9. Overall reading aloud for fluency at all levels, sentences and progressing to paragraph level. Share reading to provide a model, turn taking is fun and powerful! 10. Scaffold writing, use sentence starters and re-write scrambled sentences, also powerful practice! Grammar and syntax will internalize!
