While many found difficulty searching for employment with the strike of COVID-19, those in the renovation and construction field were loaded with work opportunities. With no access to leisure travel during lockdown, many Canadians across the country turned to upgrading their homes to make their living and now working spaces more enjoyable According to a new survey from TD Bank, home renovations went up nearly 40% during the pandemic. Especially with social distancing, ...many residents decide to upgrade their outdoor spaces as well. It is important for many to have a private space outdoors that could be put to use when the weather is good and one’s backyard is a place that is considered safe from the public. TD created a survey to ask residents their thoughts on home buying and renovations to their current homes. Given that there is an uncertainty that the market will change or remain the same, many Canadians are resisting from purchasing a new home. The survey showed that only 10% would consider moving homes. Now that there is a potential second lockdown coming our way, renovations may increase even more before serious restrictions take place this upcoming winter. Toronto is planning to open their first modular housing facility in Scarborough considering their first set of homes were installed this past week.This housing facility will be located at 11 Macey Avenue. The purpose of this project is to create affordable rental homes for residents which also provide support services. In fact, they are specifically designed for those experiencing homelessness Mayor John Tory has spoken about the initiative: The City’s Modular Housing In...itiative is an innovative and cost-effective way in which we are building small-scale, affordable, infill housing while providing a rapid, dignified response to connect people experiencing homelessness with homes and appropriate supports to help them achieve housing stability The city of Toronto had their plan approved by Council towards the end of April. In their plan, they outlined that they were hoping to create 250 modular supportive homes. In Phase 1, the first 100 homes will be separated between 56 studio homes at 11 Macey Avenue and 44 homes at 150 Harrison Street. However, the remaining 150 homes will be delivered during phase 2, which is expected to happen in 2021. In each building, there will be: 1 3 stories 2 Common rooms 3 Dining rooms 4 Program rooms 5 Administrative offices Each home will include: 1 Approximately 300 square feet 2 Built-in kitchen 3 Twin bed with frame and mattress 4 Dining table and chairs. What are the benefits of modular housing? Provides immediate relief for people experiencing homelessness.
