Ed Lafontaine presenting a trophy, 1954. Posting in the hope that someone remembers the occasion and the sweet smiling boy!
Artifact of the day!! The heavy iron piece at the bottom is shaped as though it might be part of railroad equipment. Do you know what this is, or how it was used? We'd love to know.

Looking for help. This colourful photo of the Atikokan Kiwanis club members was donated in a picture frame with glass covering. At some point before donation, something on the glass adhered to the photo. We cannot separate them. Is there another copy of this photo in someone's possession? We would like to make a copy for our collection of Kiwanis material. All of the men in the photo are identified - this is a good example of a photo showing a significant Kiwanis event.
Fascinating story of the Code Breakers
This amazing painting portrays the moment the Raft Lake Cut opened. It was painted by Nina West. She was a member of the Atikokan Art Club. This club, under the guidance of Mari (Mary) Hegler presented an exhibit showing the development of Steep Rock Iron Mines in 1958. Nina's painting is part of the museum's iron mine exhibit. In the center of the exhibit is this dredge model created by her husband, John West. John was a foreman carpenter at Steep Rock Iron Mines. Nina and John were from Sweden. They met in Thunder Bay and moved to Atikokan in 1937. Nina and John raised three children in Atikokan; Myrtle, Astrid and Harold. Thanks to Nancy Moffat Myers and the followers of the Atikokan Memories FB page, the mystery of the dredge model has been solved. Another great Atikokan story!
