We know that we are happy when our mind is peaceful, and unhappy when it is not. It is therefore clear that our happiness depends upon our having a peaceful mind and not on good external conditions. Even if our external conditions are poor, if we maintain a peaceful mind all the time we shall always be happy. THE BENEFITS OF MEMORIZATION Very soon we will enjoy the great good fortune of receiving the oral transmission of The Mirror of Dharma with Additions at the 201...9 Fall Festival: https://kadampafestivals.org/fall-2019 In this precious book, Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche gives great encouragement to memorize the Introduction as a basis for contemplating the instructions presented in the remaining chapters. He explains how we should mentally repeat the instructions while continually concentrating again and again on their meaning. We will be guided through this special practice during the Festival. How wonderful! In the meantime, please enjoy this short video on the benefits of memorization.

Happy Buddha’s Enlightenment Day! April 15th marks the anniversary of Buddha Shakyamuni demonstrating the attainment of enlightenment in 589 BCE. This is an... extremely important day in the Buddhist calendar because our actions are 100,000 times more powerful than on other days. When Buddha Shakyamuni was about to attain enlightenment many demons tried to harm him by firing weapons at him, but through the power of his mental stabilization on love he remained unharmed. He did not retaliate, but his meditation was powerful enough to disarm all his enemies. Similarly, if we ourself realize great compassion, great love, and bodhichitta, we shall be protected from every harm. -Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, Joyful Path of Good Fortune

TURNING THE WHEEL OF DHARMA DAY 2018 June 4 marks the anniversary of Buddha’s first teaching in this world and also the birthday of Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyat...so, the Founder of the New Kadampa Tradition International Kadampa Buddhist Union. Forty-nine days after Buddha attained enlightenment, as a result of requests he rose from meditation and taught the first Wheel of Dharma. These teachings, which include the Sutra of the Four Noble Truths and other discourses, are the principal source of the Hinayana, or Lesser Vehicle, of Buddhism. Later, Buddha taught the second and third Wheels of Dharma, which include the Perfection of Wisdom Sutras and the Sutra Discriminating the Intention, respectively. These teachings are the source of the Mahayana, or Great Vehicle, of Buddhism. It is because of the great kindness of Buddha in turning the Wheel of Dharma that the people of this world have the opportunity to follow a spiritual path to the permanent inner peace of enlightenment. Without these teachings there would be no path for us to follow and so no possibility of bringing our suffering to an end. To commemorate this special day, Kadampa Buddhist centers around the world hold special events with prayers for Buddha’s teachings to flourish in this world for a very long time.
