You know what a lobster is, but have you ever heard of young-of-the-year lobsters? Young-of-the-year is a term used by scientists to describe lobsters at the ...postlarval stage. Their abundance in the population can be a good indication of how many older and bigger lobsters there will be in the years to come. Over the last few years, we’ve observed a rapid and steady increase in young-of-the-years at some sites, which is great news for lobsters, and for the fishing industry! Data on young-of-the-years are gathered through a science project led by the Prince Edward Island Fishermen’s Association with the collaboration of our scientists and the provincial government. Every year in July since 2009, fishermen have been placing lobster collectorstraps that mimic young lobsters’ favourite environment: rocky reefson the seafloor at seven sites around the island. In the fall, they haul the collectors up, and bring them to shore. That’s when our scientists and technicians come in. They gather at a wharf in P.E.I., and everyone spends the day sorting, counting and measuring juvenile lobsters and other species caught in the collectors. At the end of the day, they release the lobsters back into the water. They repeat this with all 30 collectors at each site. Data are then entered in a large, open-source database used by science groups along the Canadian and American east coast and internationally. The politics of the fishing industry can be tricky to navigate. Balancing conservation with economics, and trying to please all parties can seem like an impossible task. Communication and progress like this is so great to see and is excellent news for our oceans! #fisheriesmanagement #conservation #eastcoast https://www.cbc.ca//right-whale-meeting-with-stakeholders-
