CANADIAN POLICE KNOWLEDGE NETWORK AND ATLANTIC POLICE ACADEMY TO CO-HOST VIOLENCE LINK WEBINAR The Canadian Police Knowledge Network (CPKN) and the Atlantic Police Academy will co-host an online presentation on the Violence Link, on October 8th at 12 p.m. AST. The violence link is the link between animal abuse and other violent crimes on humans. It has been established through decades of evidence-based research that where there is animal abuse there is a high probability... that a violent crime has or will be committed on a human. Presenter Sgt. Teena Stoddart, Ottawa Police Service, will discuss the evidence based research and cases involving partner assault, pedophilia, human trafficking, how dog fighting funds gang, and organized crimes. Sgt. Stoddart will discuss how police officers, animal welfare officers, victim services professionals, and veterinarians can recognize the violence link during investigations, and the effect they can have on community safety for all living beings. The webinar is presented free of charge to police officers, animal welfare enforcement officers, by-law officers, victim services professionals, psychologists, psychiatrists, veterinarians, and politicians concerned about community safety. An achievement celebration was held yesterday at the Atlantic Police Academy for Squad 116 of the Police Science Program. During the ceremony, 32 police cadets returned their cadet epaulets and received certificates as police constables. Congratulations to you all, and be safe!

Executive Director Forrest Spencer of the APA swears-in the newest Learning Manager, Inspector Andrew McNabb, hired recently. Insp. McNabb joins the APA team after serving two years with the Halifax Regional Police and twenty-four years with the Toronto Police Service. He is originally from Windsor, NS. Recruits with the Police Science Program returned this week to continue their training under the strict guidelines and measures in place. Their training is being undertaken vastly different than it was before the COVID-19 pandemic but without a doubt it will be just as skilled, relevant, and high quality!

Squad 116 had a fundraising goal of $330 for PEI Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. The recruits surpassed this goal and raised $1360.00! Due to COVID-19 restrictions on public gatherings, the recruits still managed to honour their pledges. Insp. Blouin even took part. Check out this video compilation...

In response to the evolving COVID-19 situation, until further notice, the APA Kit Shop will be closed to walk-ins and pick-ups. You can still place a telephone or an online order for delivery. As well, the overall building is closed to the public, but accessible for police cadets and staff only. In-service courses and training scheduled before April 20, 2020, have also been postponed and scheduling will be reassessed at that time. Thank you for understanding.

The PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada (PEIANC) presented recruits of our Police Science Program, Squad 116, with Cultural Awareness Training today. It was a great session, with much learning.

Over the past two weeks, Sheriffs with the New Brunswick Department of Justice and Public Safety underwent the mandatory intensive firearm training with us as part of their arming initiative. Several groups have taken the training so far, with more yet to be trained.

This Sunday, 34 police recruits, Squad 116, will arrive to the Atlantic Police Academy to begin their face-to-face training after spending the last 3 weeks or so doing a portion of criminal law and criminal investigations online. We look forward to meeting you all!
