Your Monthly e-Tip: April 2020 from Wounds Canada Foot Care at Home During the COVID-19 Pandemic A lot has changed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many people are staying home, all day, every day. This might be a nice break for the first couple of days, but after that it can become tiresome and boring. Many businesses, including various health clinics, have either shut down or sharply reduced their patient load. Your chiropodists or podiatrists clinic is probably amo...Continue reading

Known as toe loops or splints, these soft and cushioned toe loops support and protect hammertoes, overlapping toes, claw toes, jammed or even broken toes. They are quick and easy to wear ~ they are designed to hold two toes together for support and protection. The loops and wrap design cushions the toes without adding any bulkiness and helps relieve pain from calluses or possible blisters. They also cushion the top and between toes to relieve any rubbing or irritation caused from footwear. They are made thin enough to be able to wear in any style of show ~ narrow toe loops fit smaller toes and the wider toe loops are made to fit the big toe. They are washable and reusable! https://youtu.be/LNG9h6wKf4A

Sesamoiditis is the inflammation of the tendons of the foot. It can be described as a sharp, numbing pain in the ball of foot, mainly at the base of the big toe. What is a Sesamoid? A sesamoid is a bone embedded in a tendon. They are found in several joints in the body. In the foot, the Sesamoids are the two pea-shaped bones located in the ball of the foot, beneath the big toe joint. They act as pulleys for the tendons, providing leverage as the big toe pushes off durin...g walking or running. Sesamoids also serve as a weigh-bearing surface for the first metatarsal bone (the long bone connected to the big toe) absorbing the weight being placed on the ball of the foot when walking, running and jumping. There are three types of sesamoid injuries of the foot- Turf toe. This is an injury of the soft tissue surrounding the big toe joint. It usually occurs when the big toe joint is extended beyond its normal range. Turf toe causes immediate, sharp pain and swelling. It usually affects the entire big toe joint and limits the motion of the toe. Turf toe may result in an injury to the soft tissue attached to the sesamoid or a fracture of the sesamoid. Sometimes a pop is felt at the moment of injury. Fracture. A fracture (break) in a sesamoid bone can be either acute or chronic. An acute fracture is caused by traumaa direct blow or impact to the bone. An acute sesamoid fracture produces immediate pain and swelling at the site of the break but usually does not affect the entire big toe joint. A chronic fracture is a stress fracture (a hairline break usually caused by repetitive stress or overuse). A chronic sesamoid fracture produces longstanding pain in the ball of the foot beneath the big toe joint. The pain, which tends to come and go, generally is aggravated with activity and relieved with rest. Sesamoiditis. This is an overuse injury involving chronic inflammation of the sesamoid bones and the tendons involved with those bones. Sesamoiditis is caused by increased pressure on the sesamoids. Often, sesamoiditis is associated with a dull, longstanding pain beneath the big toe joint. The pain comes and goes, usually occurring with certain shoes or certain activities. Treatments- padding, taping or strapping to offload pressure; immobilization (use of cast or crutches to prevent weight-bearing and severity of injury, anti-inflammatory medication to assist with pain and inflammation; physical therapy to help strengthen and condition foot; and finally orthotics to help balance the pressure placed on the ball of the foot. #foothealthfacts
