It feels hollow to unite against a nebulous concept without naming its lived reality. Politicians across the spectrum choosing to militarize fascist police departments is a lived reality. Civic divestment from policing not being made an election issue by white voters is a lived reality.... RCMP abuses of Wet’suwet’en land defenders are a lived reality. This extends to theatre. Black/Indigenous/People of Colour (BIPOC) being less equipped to work for free and therefore less able to engage in community theatre is a lived reality. Black actors in THIS theatre community being denied auditions to the point that a human rights tribunal is necessary is a lived reality. And let’s not pretend we’re absolved in this. If we were antiracist enough in reality as opposed to concept, we would have already attracted a more diverse audience, cast, and management. There are BIPOC makers and lovers of art who are here, talented, and ready to engage. It’s not enough for us to just *say* we’d be welcoming. The worth of our allyship is not ours to measure. But it is our responsibility. We are looking at ways in which we can follow through on that responsibility with action.
