It has definitely been a challenging year, but even with the challenges and the negative things we had, it was a year of growth, of finding compassion and to welcome the uncomfortable to make us stronger. A little break down of Garbha Pindasana a posture from the #ashtangaprimaryseries posted by Andrea. Do you want to know more about different variations and how to safely practice this asanas? Stay tuned, we have some news for you! #Repost @andrea_warhola... Day #3 of #AshtangisToTheCore! One of my favorite postures from the primary series because it's so much fun! #GarbhaPindasana or embryo in womb pose. A pose that requires a lot of hip rotation and flexion to be comfortable in the full expression of the pose. Let's look at it! 1. From padmasana (lotus) slide the arms through the openings between the legs, use the strength of the arms and flexion of the hip joint to bring the legs close to the chest. Engaging bandhas round the spine and roll back and forward. Some ashtangis say it's 9 rolls, some others say it's 5. After that we finish in kukutasana which is an arm balancing posture. 2. If your arms don't slide through DON'T TRY TO FORCE THEM! Use some water or your own sweat (as much as that may sound gross) to slide them trough. 3. If you don't have water or sweat try hugging the legs from the sides. Forcing the arms between the legs can cause injury so be mindful and gentle with your body. If you try this variation try to finish with utpluthih, it will help you work on pelvic floor and core strength to lift up. 4. If you don't practice lotus please don't try to force it. I've seen a lot of knee injuries from people trying to force the body into the pose. Cross the shins and hug the legs from the sides. Maybe if it's comfortable grab your feet as you roll. Finish pressing the hands on the mat lifting the hips up even if the feet are still on the ground. *Remember everything builds up and with practice you will notice it gets easier as you are working on building strength. **Don't forget to BREATHE and enjoy every movement. If you focus on the breath the practice is a moving meditation. The winter solstice marks in the calendar the beginning of the winter season and is the shortest day of the year...or the longest night. We celebrate the darkest day of the year to welcome new beginnings: closing cycles, releasing what we don't need and start preparing our bodies and minds to invite the light.... However we translate this to our lives, the solstice marks an important day for many... because after the darkest night, days will only start getting longer and brighter. Salamba Sarvgsana Salamba = supported Sarvga = all limbs Asana = posture... Commonly known as shoulder stand, this pose was called the Queen of the asanas. As any inverted posture, shoulder stand helps reverse the action of gravity in the body, encouraging the blood flow to reverse nourishing the brain and neurones. When our body is in an inverted position the breath becomes slower and deeper, allowing our nervous system to relax and helping us reduce anxiety and stress. Practicing Sarvgsana regularly, will help balance the circulatory, respiratory, digestive, reproductive, endocrine and nervous systems; will improve neck flexibility at the same time as it will strengthen the shoulders and core, while stimulating the thyroid gland. Variations like vipartakara (half shoulder-stand) and legs up the wall are a good place to start if you don't feel confident enough to come up all the way to your shoulders. Autumn is the time of the year where nature transitions between the heat and light of Ptita dosha to that cool, dry and active Vata season. Vrabhadrsana I = Warrior I Pose Vra= Hero bhadra= blessed/prosperous sana= pose... Warrior I pose usually gives a sense of stability and grounding at the same time as we find that light feeling of openness on the upper body as the arms reach to the sky. As you practice this pose frequently you will notice it stretches the hip joints, abdomen, chest, and shoulders at the same time that it keeps the thighs, ankles and calves strong as the feet stand firmly on the ground. This is a great posture to start working on balance if you bring the gaze towards your hands; as well as it helps building strength on the lower back. There are many arm variations in this pose depending on how your shoulders are feeling during your practice. Lets talk about props! Using a yoga bolster: Bolsters have many uses during a yoga practice. Although they are most of the times related to restorative and/or yin practice, the reality is that bolsters can be used in any type of practice to help create support, providing with enough space to work in stretching postures.... In the pictures we can see Michelle demonstrating several uses of the bolster to support her practice. 1. Supported Savsana. Placing the bolster underneath the knees gives a nice release to the lower back while in this posture. The next time you are in your final relaxation posture try using a bolster or a folded blanket underneath the knees, you can thank us next time you practice with us ;) 2. Supported Matsysana or Fish Pose. She uses the bolster to support from the base of her spine to the back of the head. At the same time that she lets the chest open, the shoulder blades gently hug the bolster. 3. Upavia Kosana or Wide angle seated forward fold. Michelle uses the bolster to support her head as she leans forward into this pose. With long holds this supported pose will gently let her access the deep tissue of the muscles allowing her to safely stretch them. 4. Baddha Kosana or Butterfly pose. In this image we can see her using the bolster to support her chest at the same time as she folds forward towards the feet. This is a nice adjustment for long holds in this pose as it allows the body to connect with a deeper stretch while being supported. . . Lets talk about props! Using yoga blocks: Blocks can be very useful in so many different ways. We can use them to help with alignment, flexibility, strength and relaxation. ... They can be used for support in some postures that need to be held longer or to help us align the body so we can perform a posture in a safer way. In the pictures we can see Jorge demonstrating several uses of the blocks during his practice. 1. Supported Matsysana or Fish Pose. He has placed the block on the mat letting his upper back rest on it while the shoulder blades hug the block as he opens the chest. This is a variation often used in longer holds of the pose in Yin or Restorative classes, but it is also a great variation of a backbend to open the chest as we release the tension on the shoulders. 2. janeysana or Low Lunge. In this pose Jorge is using two blocks to support his hands and reach for the floor. The blocks give him enough space to straighten the spine as he opens the chest forward. 3. Trikonsana or Triangle Pose. Jorge uses the block to reach for the floor as he leans to the side lengthening the spine. The block is preventing him from collapsing his lateral spine which provides him enough space to open the chest to the side. 4. Setu Bandhasana or Bridge Pose. In this image we see the 3 different sides of the block supporting him as he rests the sacrum on the block and eases the front side of his hips and abdomen which quite often get tight from long periods of sitting. . . .
