The ma...in purpose of this material is to help the child discriminate size, shape and colour. It is also preparation for later math (algebra), with the concept of squaring. Yes, you read that correctly, children in our Montessori Casa classrooms are exploring the relationships of equations as complicated as (a+b+c+d+e+f+g+h+i+j)(a+b+c+d+e+f+g+h+i+j)! The beautiful and orderly layout of the Decanomial Square assists the child with understanding geometric relationships and patterns and helps the child to develop strong concentration and problem-solving skills. Art lessons in a Montessori classroom are presented in the same way all other lessons are. A demonstration is given to show the child the proper use of materials. At AMS, we believe that every student should have safe spaces to explore and nurture their individual sense of curiosity. During outdoor education class our students were learning about ice formations.

The Number Rods introduce the child to quantity 110 and their corresponding number names. Through exploration with the material, the child also develops concepts in sequence of number, combinations of 10 and basic arithmetic.

The Beatrice Watson-Acheson Foundation is named in remembrance of the founder, J. Cameron Watson and his mother, Beatrice. Beatrice was a very caring teacher, and Cameron, a philanthropic Scarborough orchardist, both shared a love for all animals and nature. These two kind and compassionate people sought to better the lives of all living creatures by teaching respect and kindness, and encouraged others to develop empathy towards all life. After 45 years, our school curriculum... continues to be known as The Kindness Program, and we still offer our Values through Humane Education Program free of charge. AMS was fortunate to have Cooper visit our school.

Bead Stringing, an activity from Practical Life, helps a child develop concentration, fine motor control, and the confidence that will serve them with all other materials in the Montessori classroom. It seems like a simple task, but how fulfilling when a child accomplishes it!
