Africville | Family Storytime this Saturday with Shauntay Grant
Free family virtual event thsi Saturday - for ages 4 and up! Join Kjipuktuk (Halifax, Nova Scotia) author and storyteller Shauntay Grant as she reads from her book Africville, illustrated by Eva Campbell. When a young girl visits the site of Africville, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the stories she’s heard from her family come to mind. Africville was a vibrant Black community for more than 150 years. She imagines what the community was once like the brightly painted houses nestl...ed into the hillside, the field where boys played football, the pond where all the kids went rafting, the bountiful fishing, the huge bonfires. But then in the 1960s, city officials decided to demolish this vibrant community, and displaced all the residents. This is a live-streamed event at 2 pm EST on Saturday, February 27. Q&A welcomed following the reading. Please note no recording of this event will be made.

Wood sculptor Gordon Becker's 5 incredible dancer sculptures almost defy gravity. It all started with an influential NFB film he saw at age 11, featuring the magical, powerful work of an Inuit sculptor, was followed by the gift of wood carving tools that Chritmas, and on to OCA. Using wood as his medium, he scuplts dancers at the edge of their abilities - at the threshold. This fascinating artist conversation discusses the innovations he came up with to create these sculptures - a mix of spontaneity, and pulling on all the skills he has to create meticulous detail in the hands, feet, face. https://youtu.be/xToyPjAKSP0
