We are pleased to let you all know that we have been given the go-ahead by our College and provincial government to resume in-person appointments. But do not worry. We assure you, a great amount of preparation has gone into keeping everyone safe. The measures put in place are in accordance with the Ontario government and will include (but are not limited to) the following: All patients and staff will be screened prior to entering the clinic. This will include the completion... of a screening questionnaire. If you screen positive, you will be asked to reschedule your appointment. All patients and staff will be required to wear a mask at all times. Staff will be wearing the appropriate PPE. There will be increased time between appointments to allow for thorough sanitization. Physical distancing measures will be in place. There will be markers inside the clinic, and we will be utilizing a parking lot waiting room system where you will be notified when to come into the clinic. Payment and appointment booking will be contactless. You will be encouraged to email or phone us to book your appointments from home and we will ask for you to set up with a credit card on file for billing purposes. Receipts will be emailed. If you want to learn more about how we are keeping everyone safe in these delicate times, we have set up a page on our website to provide you with everything you might need to know: auroraprime.ca/covid Or, if you feel like it, you can always call us at (905) 726-2252 or e-mail at [email protected] so we can answer any more questions you may have. We'd also like to thank you all for your understanding and continued support during the last few months

It’s Fall Prevention Month!!! We’re reaching the end of the month now, but this is a crucial issue that has a big impact all throughout the year, especially during the icy season we’re getting into now. We have to make sure we maintain our awareness levels high going into December and beyond! Most of us take our sense of balance for granted because we really don't ever have to think about it until something goes wrong.... Normally, our inner ear, joints and muscles, and eyes are providing our brain with ongoing information about our body awareness and our sense of balance. Many patients who are suffering from a vestibular disorder frequently have a distorted sense of space. The sudden dizziness and vertigo can be so frightening that panic and anxiety often set in. The fear of losing control, the fear of falling, the fear of a life-threatening condition are all things they’re battling within their heads. However, despite the paralyzing fears, anxiety, and panic that come with dizziness and vertigo, there are several anxiety management strategies for vestibular conditions. These include: Gentle exercise; Mindfulness meditation; Journaling; Quality sleep; Relaxation techniques; Better planning strategies. Don’t attempt all of these strategies at once, trial with one at a time. Build the habit of that activity into your week, and tackle another management strategy. - Peter Teloniatis (M.Sc. PT, B.Sc. So much of our time is spent on personal electronic devices...but how often do you monitor your posture while using them? "Texter's neck" occurs when sustaining poor postures while using devices such as cell phones and tablets Researchers at a University in Queensland, Australia were able to demonstrate bony horn-like projections at the base of the skull in younger subjects. They hypothesized that these bony growths were in response to excessive strain on... the skull from the pull of muscles and ligaments due to the increased forward tilt of the head while using electronic devices. It can commonly result in: Neck pain Headaches Upper back pain Paresthesia in the hands/arms A large amount of strain is placed on the joints and muscles of your neck and upper back when you allow your head to lean ahead of your body. Ideally, you want to keep your ears lined up with your shoulders. This may necessitate you elevating your hand held device or maintaining a good neck position by performing a chin tuck prior to looking down. At Aurora Prime Physiotherapy our Registered Physiotherapists can assess your posture and provide specific exercises and education to address your needs. - Heather Ritchie (M.Sc. PT, B.Sc. Kin., Dip. Continuing with the theme of our recent post on the medial longitudinal arch, today we’ll explain a bit more about the Decreased Medial Longitudinal Arch Height... also known as flat feet Flat feet can contribute to a number of orthopaedic conditions including: Plantar fasciitis Tibialis posterior... Tendonopathy Knee pain Hip pain Muscular imbalances around the hip such as weakness in the gluteus medius or tension in the tensor fascia latae (highlighted in our past posts) can accentuate a dropped medial longitudinal arch. This dysfunction may be more apparent on gait analysis and can contribute to over-pronation. Mid-foot joint mobility can also affect your medial longitudinal arch. It is important that you consult a Registered Physiotherapist to evaluate your feet in a static non-weight bearing position as well as in more dynamic situations to better understand what is contributing to your flat feet. Contact us at Aurora Prime Physiotherapy to book your assessment, and we can help you identify the root cause of your issue. In our next post we’ll go over some exercises that can target muscles to help support your arch! - Heather Ritchie (M.Sc. PT, B.Sc. Kin., Dip. Manip. PT, FCAMPT). Did you know dry needling is different from acupuncture? Dry needling treats muscle pain by inserting the needle into trigger points. Trigger points are persistent taught bands of muscle that can cause pain locally and to distant parts of the body. Goals of dry needling include:... Decreased pain; Improved biomechanical function; Increased strength and flexibility of the affected muscle. Your Physiotherapist has received special training to safely perform this technique and may suggest integrating it into your therapy. Contact us for an assessment to see if dry needling may be appropriate for you! - by Heather Ritchie. Breathwork has been a huge movement in the health & wellness world lately. And for good reason! Did you know that breath is an amazing way to tap into our autonomic nervous system and have more control over that fight or flight system and promote the rest and digest system? In other words, one way we can use our breath is to help us reduce stress and decrease any anxious energy that we might be feeling. ... Even better, it's a tool you have with you wherever you go! So if you are looking for an in-the-moment hack to try to reduce some stress, one great breathing technique to try out is called Box Breathing How it works: 1 Breathe in through your nose and deep into your belly for a count of 4 seconds; 2 At the end of your inhale, hold your breath for a count of 4 seconds; 3 Then breathe out of your mouth for a count of 4 seconds; 4 At the end of your exhale, hold your breath for a count of 4 seconds; And repeat 3 times. If you feel dizzy at all, spend some time breathing normally and then decrease how long you hold your breath when you try again. Try it out and see how your energy changes! - by Melissa Reinders ( @MissMakingLemonade ), who is also one of our physiotherapists at our clinic. As pelvic health physiotherapists, helping our clients understand their pain and what to do about it has been one of the most effective strategies to help them manage persistent pain. The International Association for the Study of Pain has defined pain as "an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage". Pain is a complex. It involves our autonomic nervous system, including our ...parasympathetic (rest and digest) and sympathetic systems (fight or flight). These are regulatory systems in our bodies. Essentially, pain is a very effective warning system designed to alert the whole person that there is a threat or a potential threat The truths about pain are as follows: 1 All pain perceived by a person is real. 2 No perceived threat = no pain. 3 Increased threat = pain is produced. 4 The brain decides how much pain you feel, not the tissues 5 Pain is an output response of the brain 100% of the time. 6 Our response to the pain can re-trigger more pain, perpetuating the pain cycle. 7 The intensity of the pain does not indicate the amount of tissue damage! The goal of pain education and pelvic health physiotherapy treatment is to down-regulate the nervous system and eliminate the threats so that the brain is no longer creating a pain response. Interesting, huh? - written by Nelly Faghani ( @PelvicHealthSolutions ), who is also one of our pelvic floor physiotherapists. If you want to learn more about pain in general or pelvic pain specifically or if you have a question, please comment down below or send us a DM. If you are feeling some kind of pain and want to understand your situation better and discover a treatment for it, then make sure to contact us through the phone/email in our profile and book an appointment with one of our physiotherapists.
