PSA: A toddler who is not yet using words to communicate or a child who mispronounces a speech sound is not lazy. Learning to talk is a complex skill that involves figuring out what to say (language) and how to say it (speech). While many young children have a relatively easy time acquiring speech and language skills, some do not. And like any other skill, learning to talk takes time and practice. When it comes to communication, assume that a child WOULD say a word/articul...ate a sound accurately if they could. Why? Using words and clear speech make communicating easier because the message can be quickly understood by others (decreasing the chance that what a child is trying to say will be misunderstood - which can be so frustrating!) To help a child learn to use words or produce sounds accurately we can show them how: - model single words for a child who isn’t yet using words to communicate (child: brings you their shoes, you: shoes!) - add another word to expand the message for a child who is using single words or incomplete sentences (child: doggie! you: big doggie!) - repeat a word with emphasis on the misarticulated sound by saying the sound a little slower, a bit louder or stretching it out (e.g. ok, let me help you find your SSSSpiderman toy)

Bonus! Your Elf can help promote language skills at this time of year! His antics provide opportunities for: - Gestures (pointing) - Initiating conversation... - Building vocabulary for action words & location words - Answering questions - Predicting and understanding thinking - Comparing and contrasting - Talking about the past and future And so much more! Wishing you all a joyful and language-filled holiday season

Don’t let the name fool you. Although these 8 speech sounds usually show up later than others in young English-speaking children, when it comes to treating difficulties, earlier is better. The Late 8 speech sounds, which the vast majority of children produce accurately by age 6, include: s - see, house, kissing z - zoo, bugs, music... sh - shoe, wash, fishing l - look, pull, balloon r - rabbit, car, bored th (voiced) - this, feather th (voiceless) - think, with, bathtub zh - measure, beige If your child has difficulty with speech sound accuracy, an S-LP can help! When an S-LP evaluates a child, more than the approximate age of acquisition is considered. This is because speech sound production is a complex process and, in addition to reduced clarity of speech, difficulty can impact: - sense of well-being - social interactions and peer relationships - literacy development - general academic difficulty through high school - other’s perceptions of the child Questions? Ask below or contact our clinic to speak with one of our S-LPs! : [email protected] : www.auroraspeechclinic.ca Source: Bleile, K. (2014, November) A Late Eight Update. Who doesn’t love opening presents?! These simple boxes are incredibly versatile for working on speech and language skills. Today, I used them in one way or another with each of my clients (ages 3-8). Pronouns: - My turn - Your turn - Mommy’s turn Predicting: - The object in the green box lived millions of years ago, but is now extinct Irregular verbs: - What did you find? I FOUND an airplane! So many possibilities! And the anticipation and excitement leading up to the opening of present felt just the same through the screen as it does in-person. See more

Today I ditched my desk. It felt like the good ‘ol days ... sitting (actually, lying flat on my belly) on the carpet to play with a fan favourite... marble run! Only this time, my laptop was beside me and my client was on the other side of the screen. It was just the change-up my sweet client needed - what I didn’t anticipate was that it was just the thing I needed, too. Don’t get me wrong - teletherapy is going SO WELL for my clients and I’m incredibly grateful to have this option for therapy during this time. It was just nice to ditch my desk for a bit today.

People games involve at least 2 people but no toys and are not only fun and easy to play just about anywhere, but helpful to practice social communication skills, too. Red Light, Green Light is a classic people game. We loved it as kids, and now so do our own kids! Sometimes, we play while riding our tricycles or other ride-on cars which makes it super fun. What classic childhood games are your kids into these days? Share below!

Did you know that May is Speech & Hearing Month? Each May, Speech-Language Pathologists & Audiologists raise public awareness about early detection and intervention in the treatment of communicative disorders (we know it’s almost the end of May but better late than never!). It is so easy to take communication for granted but the ability to communicate, speak, hear and be heard is not an ability everyone has.... A communication disorder may prevent a child from asking what they need, a student from hearing instructions at school, or an adult from performing well at work. Speech-Language Pathologists help work on the following: - Speech sounds (articulation) - Language (both late speaking children and adults with aphasia) - Literacy - Social communication - Voice/ Public speaking - Fluency (also known as stuttering) - Cognitive-communication memory, attention, problem solving - Feeding and swallowing Spread awareness and share this post. Speak well. Hear well. Live well.

These days, we’re thankful that technology allows us to continue to provide fun, engaging and impactful speech and language treatment to our clients. There are so many fun and interactive virtual games, but today it felt good to bust out some real toys and play! My little guy had similar toys out on his side of the screen and we had such fun copying each other , adding new ideas to play and making the farm animals be silly to get a laugh out of each other. Oh ya, w...e built vocabulary and phrase length along the way, too! If you’re wondering if speech therapy is something your child might benefit from, reach out to us! We offer free (15 minute) screenings and teletherapy trials with one of our fabulous SLPs! www.auroraspeechclinic.ca [email protected] See more

We use (play with!) mini objects and figurines in therapy all the time. They’re well loved by kids and therapists alike. Today, we paired mini objects with picture cards to play memory in our teletherapy sessions. Adding the mini objects made it easy for the client to take a turn (by naming the object on the card they wanted to turn over) and, most importantly, upped the fun factor quite a bit! Reach out to us to find out more about our speech and language therapy servic...es offered through telepractice! : [email protected] : www.auroraspeechclinic.ca See more

Who’s thinking about getting their kiddo ready for kindergarten?! . . Just kidding. Kind of... .... . We know that all the caregivers at home are busy working, homeschooling, and juggling a million other things (we are too). But for all of you with children, especially those who are starting JK in the Fall, we wanted to let you know-if you didn’t already- that speech-language pathologists work on literacy and early literacy skills too! We offer telepractice (sessions on zoom) and are here if you need help getting your little one Kindergarten ready! Send us a message or an email ([email protected]) if you’d like a copy of our Early Literacy Checklist (ages 3-6) so you know what you can practice at home. ~ Be well! ~ #asc #speechtherapy #kindergartenreadiness #literacy #earlyliteracy #yorkregion See more
