Some leaders mistakenly believe that new policy translates into new behaviour. Wrong. Policies provide goalposts for awareness and accountability yes, but only environments change behaviour. Case in point on a sensitive current topic: Police. Several years back I sat next to a young fellow (i used to be one of those!) on an airplane who was graduating in forensic studies and was looking forward to joining the force in his Saskatchewan hometown. He was coming back from the US ...where he did a shadowing session for 4 weeks in a US city so I asked him if he noticed any major differences. He said that while both sides have their strengths and weaknesses (we can learn from each other) ... he talked about noticing that there wasn't the same if any focus on getting into the schools to meet kids at a young age and he felt that was important. He said he saw in cities that did that it allowed people in high stress situations to view each other differently and that it changed outcomes. Bad behaviour whether racism or otherwise is almost always sparked by fear & ignorance. Create an environment where people have a chance to get "know" each other and you almost don't need policy to fix the bad behaviors you are addressing in your company, better ones just naturally flow out. Have you ever tried to help someone believe in themselves? My experience is that encouragement alone, while powerful, is not enough. They need an environment where they both see something different (success & a different future) and experience it themselves as they are challenged by leaders with a plan of regular baby steps to get there. The last two letters of the word Believe: VE are the key. 1. Visualize something different 2. Experience it yourself. My thing is this: The performance gains that most companies seek may not require additional knowledge. They are best unleashed by leaders who build environments that consistently bring out of their people more of the things they already know. I normally don't like the word can't. When you tell me what I can't have, I likely want it more. When you tell me what I can't do it focuses me on the negative and not the positive, not a great way to motivate and engage long term. In any relationship when we are constantly focus on can't we become a drag and likely aren't getting the results we want.
