Mars is Indigenous Language Month. For this occasion, poet Rita Mestokosho was on the ICI Première program Bonjour la Côte", to discuss the importance of speaking your language to celebrate your culture. The interview focused on Innu-Aimun and activities organized by the Ekuanitshit Innu Culture House, for which Mrs. Mestokosho is the coordinator, to showcase this language. Enjoy! Congratulations to Mrs. Marjolaine Étienne on her appointment as advisor to United Nations General Secretary on UN Voluntary Fund for Indigenous Peoples. Mrs. Étienne will act as the representative of Canada's Indigenous Peoples. An Innu from Mashteuiatsh, she cumulates over 15 years of political life as well as community intervention and development. In 2018, she was invited by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights tto attend a training course to acquire a certificate in human rights. The Secrétariat aux affaires autochtones wishes to highlight the commitment of Mrs Jennifer Brazeau, Executive Director of the Centre d'amitié autochtone de Lanaudière, who made Le Devoir’s list of 21 Quebecers who will make 2021. Mrs Brazeau, who has been running the Centre for more than a year and a half, found herself at the heart of the relations with the Quebec government after Joyce Echaquan’s tragic death last September. She and her team of 16 people are now working with Lanaudière’s CIUSSS to equip the Centre’s new clinic, which will provide culturally safe health care to the region’s Aboriginal people. CALL FOR PROJECTS The Secrétariat aux affaires autochtones is launching a call for projects to support initiatives for Aboriginal seniors. The interested communities and organizations may receive up to $10,000 in financial assistance per project or initiative. Rooted in the Government Action Plan for the Social and Cultural Development of the First Nations and Inuit 2017-2022, this call for projects has a two-fold objective: to establish a varied, effective, relevant and cu...lturally reassuring service offer that contributes both to combating abuse and promoting proper treatment, and to encourage active reflection between Aboriginal youth and seniors on the role of traditional knowledge.
