Different brake noises have different causes within the brake system. Being able to properly identify the noise and know what is causing it will help you determ...ine a proper solution. In this video, we teach you the difference between a high-frequency and low-frequency squeal. We then talk about the causes of these different squeals and how to stop them. We recently had a #FordEdge come into our shop with a complaint of high-speed pedal pulsation. The owner informed us that the vehicle didn't get used much and d...oes a lot of sitting around in the elements. A first quick look through the wheels didn't show any signs of concern. The #rotor surface looked clean and smooth. However, once we took the wheels off and inspected the #brakes, we quickly found the problem. When we took the front rotors off the vehicle, we found the inboard side of the rotor was a mess. Rust buildup was prominent on the inboard surface. Additionally, the inboard was showing signs of a condition known as #rustjacking. Rust jacking can occur on rotors when paired with ceramic friction. Ceramic #brakepads leave a thin layer of material on the rotor's surface when applied. When excess moisture builds up on the rotor's surface, it can creep under this friction layer. Over time the moisture will cause some of that material to pop off the rotor. This leads to an uneven surface on the rotor. This is otherwise known as a thickness variation. This thickness variation caused the high-speed pulsation that brought the vehicle into our shop. Since the vehicle was sitting around in the Chicago elements with a lot of rain, snow and sleet, it makes sense that the moisture buildup would lead to this problem. How do you protect against this condition? #Coatedrotors help protect against the damaging effects of rust and corrosion. The coating protects the edges of the rotor surface. This prevents moisture from creeping under the friction layer, which leads to rust jacking. #corrosion #instaservice #instarepair #technician #mechanic #tech #instatech #autorepair #carmechanic #auto #carparts #brakerepair #brakejob #bestinbrakes

If you are having trouble removing a drum-in-hat #rotor, don't just take a hammer to it. You may have to adjust the #parkingbrake and back it off the rotor in o...rder to remove the rear rotor. In order to adjust the parking brake, you will need to locate the access hole on the rotor. Some rotors have the access hole on the hat of the rotor. Others, like the #F150 are located in the back of the rotor. Take the rubber plug off the rotor. Then, use a brake spoon to turn the adjuster wheel. Usually, a few clicks of the wheel will do the trick. If you don't know which direction to turn the wheel, look in the owner's manual. #instatech #autorepair #carmechanic #auto #carparts #tech #mechanic #brakes #brakerepair #instatech #brakejob See more

Why buy a plated caliper? This vehicle has been sitting in our corporate HQ lot since stay-at-home orders were issued in March. It’s been exposed to the element...s for over four months, including snow, sleet and rain. The calipers still look almost as good as the day they were installed. #raybestos #bestinbrakes #caliper #brakecaliper #brakes #brakeparts #brakejob #brakerepair #maintenancemonday See more

When it comes to buying brake rotors, price is not the only factor you should take into consideration. In fact, buying a cheap, lightweight rotor can cost you m...ore in the long run. Take a look at the first picture. The rotor on the right is an OE rotor and the rotor on the left is a Raybestos brake rotor. You can see that Raybestos matches OE fit, form and function. The rotor plate thickness is the same as well as the vane configuration. This ensures OE-matched performance and service life. Now take a look at the second picture comparing a competitor's rotor on the left to our rotor on the right. As you can see immediately, the rotor plate of our competitor is significantly thinner than our OE-matched plate. Additionally, the vane configuration does not match These are the cost-cutting measures some manufacturers take that result in a cheaper rotor for the consumer. However, putting a lightweight rotor on your vehicle like the one that is pictured will get you in trouble quickly. These cost-cutting measures put your vehicle at a much greater risk for the brake system overheating, which will lead to premature failure. This will result in you having to not only replace your rotors but other parts of the brake system as well. Save yourself time and money in the long run by purchasing an OE-matched aftermarket rotor.
