The Dovbush Dancers and the Vancouver Branch of the Association of United Ukrainian Canadians have recently donated a sum of $300 in support of Black and Indigenous communities in Vancouver. The sum was split between two organizations, with $150 going to the Hogan’s Alley Society and $150 going to the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society. Even today, in 2020, Black and Indigenous communities face systemic issues leading to incarceration, poverty, and police brutalit...y. We support these communities in their efforts to attain equality and social justice without prejudice. We chose to make this donation in an effort to uplift these communities and to improve their ability to provide services that create positive change here in Vancouver. We recommend that you look into these organizations and the work that they are doing for their communities. If we can learn, understand, and support each other, we can work towards a more just future for everyone. See more

In any other year, this time of year would have been marked with a year end concert for the performing arts groups of the AUUC in Vancouver. All of the learning, rehearsing and preparations throughout the cultural season would culminate in a concert of song, music and dance. Ukrainian Dance Groups, Choirs, and Orchestras are well known in Canada, but there is so much more to preserving and sharing a cultural heritage. Food, language, and folk arts and crafts have made their way into the Canadian cultural mosaic and the AUUC has continued to preserve and share these cultural traditions throughout its history. From cross stitch embroidery to beading and Pysanky (Ukrainian Easter Eggs) decorating, join us for a look at how the AUUC continues to p...reserve Ukrainian culture through arts and crafts. https://www.auucvancouver.ca/folkartsandcrafts If you’re are interested in learning how to make Pysanky, below is a link to a local company, Baba’s Beeswax, where you can source instructions and materials. https://www.babasbeeswax.com/SuggestedPysankySupplies.htm #ukrainian #pysanky #ukrainianart #ukrainianculture #gerdan #embroidery
We at the AUUC Vancouver Branch stand in solidarity with and in support of those protesters in the United States and all over the world fighting for Black lives after the recent murder of George Floyd by police officer Derek Chauvin. As an organization, we have always supported social causes to improve the lives of people regardless of race or colour. We likewise support the fight for racial equality. We demand justice for the many Black lives that have been lost to police... brutality and racist killings across the globe. The abuse and murder of Black people at the hands of the police must end. President Trump must be held accountable for his comments and actions in further inciting violence against protesters. We cannot stay silent if we hope to achieve meaningful change. The Canadian government must condemn President Trump. They must condemn the indiscriminate killing of Black and Indigenous people, both in America and around the world. Now is the time to act. Black lives matter. The AUUC Vancouver Branch will be making a donation to the NAACP Legal Defence Fund in order to support the fight to end police brutality. Here are some links to where you can donate to make a difference: US Organizations and Bail Funds: Black Lives Matter official website https://blacklivesmatter.com/what-matters-2020/ NAACP official site - legal organization for fighting racial injustice https://www.naacpldf.org/about-us/ National Bail Fund - proceeds go directly to help those wrongly incarcerated https://www.communityjusticeexchange.org/nbfn-directory Canadian Contacts & Organizations: The Canadian Human Rights Commission. https://www.chrc-ccdp.gc.ca/eng/content/contact-us Canadian Human Rights Tribunal https://www.chrt-tcdp.gc.ca/con/offices-of-the-chrt-en.html Canadian Race Relations Foundation https://www.crrf-fcrr.ca/en/ LINK TO OUR WEBSITE: https://www.auucvancouver.ca/black-lives-matter
