Most of us are familiar with the 2 branches of the nervous system: fight/flight responses and rest/digest. Fight /flight include things such as: feeling emotions/getting angry, speaking up (fight) ... walking/running away or leaving (flight/flee). Then there’s rest/digest Exactly as it means - your body, organs, systems are functioning optimally (because they don’t need to engage in a fight or flee response!) you are socially connected and present. However with chronic stress and go-go-go lifestyle there’s little time for rest and digest. Leaving the body in a chronic fight or flight state. Can you relate? What does this feel like for you? Then there’s freeze too (when there isn’t the option of fight of flight) - post coming soon. I’d say much of North America lives in a functional freeze. For me, there’s something mesmerizing about this photo. The flowers, the white petals, some broken off, the delicate-ness and at same time it’s strength, the faded background, the closeness to the earth. All of it .... settles my nervous system and body as I take it in. ... I feel myself go from activation (Fight/flight, sympathetic). To not. The Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) is so essential for our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. It’s when one has a dys-regulated nervous system that many chronic health conditions start. This is a classic reflection of the Adverse Childhood Experiences study https://acestoohigh.com/... Nervous system dysregulation can start in utero, if a mother is experiencing significant stress. It impacts the fetuses brain and nervous system development This can continue at birth (birth trauma), and after birth depending on the nurturing present (or not), external stressors etc - that continue to affect a baby/child’s nervous system development. Nervous system functioning can be impacted later in life too with chronic stress. When there’s too much, too fast, too soon happening in life. Relate?? Thus never giving the body or system time to return to a place of rest/digest. This impacts the adrenals, hormonal system, immune system, digestion and more. It’s like a car with the gas pedal continually pressed. Or worse both the brake and gas pedal pressed. Eventually there will be significant wear and tear on your car! Somatic Experiencing is one powerful and gentle way to return to a more regulated nervous system. Thus improving overall health.
