This included one which had the potential to escalate into a serious confrontation between America and Britain, such as the long-standing dispute with Britain concerning the border of British Guiana (modern Guyana). The United States persuaded Britain to submit the case to an arbitration tribunal. The resulting award gave the the larger share of the disputed territory to Britain. Venezuela was strictly neutral throughout WWI; and such neutrality irritated the Allies. In spite of that, Venezuelan Government at the time, lead by President Juan Vicente Gómez, was determined to maintain relations with all belligerent countries. However, things changed when, during the war, massive oil reserves were discovered in western Venezuela and President Juan Vicente Gómez began the transformation of the economy, from a heavy dependence on agricultural exports to a reliance on petroleum- a single commodity, but a very important one. There is a solid chance you have not yet come across Venezuelan coffee, even if you’re a coffee lover. Venezuela does grow exceptionally good coffee beans, but most of its production is consumed domestically. But, Why? in my opinion, the numerous challenges posed by the political and socio-economic climate of the country in the past couple of decades, economic plans that focused on the oil industry and, more recently, policy regulations, fixed prices & exports bans from the government... in short, a series of unfortunate events, I would say. T Coffee production in Venezuela began in the late 18th century. Venezuela was ranked close to Colombia at one time in coffee production. By 1800s, coffee became the major plantation crop, surpassing Cocoa beans and tobacco. In the 1830s, Venezuela was the third largest coffee exporter in the world. In 1919, coffee and cocoa beans constituted 75% of the country's exports, the principal market being the U.S. While there are the local varieties of coffee grown in Venezuela, the basic universal coffee varieties under which the Venezuelan beans fall under are the and the . The humble E is far more interesting than it seems! .
