Do you have a Social Insurance Number that Begins with a 9? The Social Insurance Number (SIN) is a nine-digit number that you need to work in Canada or to have access to government programs and benefits. There is no fee to apply for a SIN. SINs that begin with a "9" are issued to temporary workers who are neither Canadian citizens nor permanent residents. The use of these SINs is temporary and are valid only until the expiry date indicated on the immigration document author...izing them to work in Canada. If your SIN begins with a "9", you must update your SIN record to ensure that the expiry date always corresponds with the expiry date on your document from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada authorizing you to work in Canada. Once your SIN record has been updated, you will receive a SIN with the new expiry date. Your previous SIN (whether it is a paper format or plastic card) is no longer valid and should be destroyed in a secure manner. Common-law? Married? Separated? If your marital status has changed, please tell the Canada Revenue Agency. Why update your marital status? To get your benefits just right! The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) uses your marital status to calculate benefit and credit payments that are right for you. If your marital status is out-of-date, you could be missing out on money, or there is a chance you could owe money.... Once you successfully update your marital status, the CRA will recalculate your payments from the month after your status changed. You must tell the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) about your new marital status by the end of the following month after your status changed. For example, if your status changed in March, you must report it by the end of April. Notify the CRA if: . you married . you became common-law . you separated for more than 90 days (due to a breakdown in the relationship) . you divorced . your spouse or common-law partner died If you have separated, wait until 90 consecutive days have passed before telling CRA. How do I know the expiry date of my temporary resident status? Temporary residents travelling with passports: When you arrived in Canada and gave your passport to the officer, they authorized your stay by placing a stamp in your passport and/or issuing an additional document. Check your passport. If you find a stamp, it should look like the picture below. ... For example, if the officer specified a date as shown in below illustration, your temporary resident status would expire on June 30th, 1993. If there is no stamp, a handwritten date or document in your passport, your temporary resident status will expire six months from the day you arrived in Canada. If you were given a visitor record, study or work permit, the expiry date is marked on the document. When applying to change conditions or extend your stay in Canada, you are required to submit photocopies of passport pages clearly showing the stamp made by Canadian authorities on your most recent entry to Canada.
