Today, the General Council Executive will be meeting for a day of reflection, discernment and decision. Tomorrow, the General Council Executive and members of t...he National Indigenous Council will be meeting to begin explorations about strategic planning conversations for our denominational ministry. This will be our new General Secretary, the Rev. Michael Blair's first meeting with the GCE as General Secretary, and the first time the National Indigenous Council and the General Council Executive are meeting. As with previous non-emergency meetings of the GCE, Elders from the National Indigenous Elders' Council with be offering their presence, prayers, and guidance to the gathering. Alan Buckingham, Business Convenor for General Council 43, will be facilitating tomorrow's conversation. A communique about the actions and decisions arising from this meeting of the GCE should be out early next week. As, always, we would invite your prayers for the work that is before us today and tomorrow.

This is not a sprint. This is not a marathon. Both of those suggest that there is a destination,... an endpoint, a goal. This is life. Life that has been. Life that will be. Life that is - now. There are signposts on our travel, but each of them point in a myriad of directions, a multiplicity of possibilities. There are waystations. Places of rest and recouperation, places to share a meal and conversation, places for a breath, or a moment to stop. But, pilgrim, this journey is one where the paths move under your body, and life, itself, moves you along. Breathe deeply. Be inspired. And know that, on this journey, you are never, ever, alone. 1,000,000 people. Grandparents. Parents. Children. Family. Friends. Community.... We grieve. We grieve the people whose names we know. We grieve the people whose names we will never know. We grieve for their families who are missing them. We grieve for their friends who are missing them. We grieve for their world who is missing them. People of every walk of life, of every faith and country. People whose stories have been shortened by a virus that was not known at this time last year. 1,000,000 people who have died. I believe that your love holds them, compassionate God, that your love holds all who remain, living, in this world. May we do all we can to comfort those who mourn. May we do all we can to comfort those who will mourn. May we do all we can - scientists and virologists, health care professionals, and people like me, walking down the street - to keep each other safe, now and always. Amen.
