Normally this time of year we'd be reminding everyone that the deadline to participate in the Avon River Arts & Culture Guide is right around the corner, but as we continue to take preemptive measures to avoid the spreading of COVID-19, planning and promoting upcoming events has become a moot point. With this in mind we are putting the printing of our handy map on hold until we can get a better sense of what the summer of 2020 holds for Nova Scotians. Many local events will need to be rescheduled, so we are going to wait until we are on the other side of this pandemic before we come up with updated publication and distribution dates. Until then stay safe everyone and may your creative juices flow and help to carry you through this stressful time.

And now for something completely different! We always look forward to Roy's imaginative works and his latest piece does not disappoint. Roy Kohn works in oil, watercolour, gouache, acrylic paints and drawing media to suit each project. Recently he has incorporated video, installation and performance to his oeuvre in order to explore ephemeral concepts. Kohn often works collaboratively with Kate Vasyliw as WeSee Inc. art collective. The work is themed around belief systems a...nd societal oddities created within the realms of popular media, superstitions, religion and politics and is often presented in non-traditional venues chosen to reflect the practicalities of each project. Kohn is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art. He did post-graduate work at the Academy of Fine Art in Rotterdam, Netherlands. His (and WeSee Inc’s) videos have been official selections of the Coney Island Film Festival and the Washington DC Independent Film Festival. The opus, The Meeky Project was an official selection of Toronto’s Nuit Blanche 2008. Roy Kohn and Kate Vasyliw co-founded and curated Roadside Attractions, a window gallery in Toronto (2007-2017). They also curated and programmed the Wardrobe International Film Festival: short/silent videos from Canada, USA, UK and Germany in 2015. Currently Kohn is working on a new video using imagery referencing séances and dybbuks. He lives and works in Summerville. Join us tonight at The Bread Gallery for @LongWinterNights to see this and other works by local artists.

As the day passes we are going to be sharing little teasers from the group show, like this quaint seaside view of laundry on the line by Noreen Rent. Noreen grew up in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia in the fifties and sixties; the youngest of four girls. She trained at NSIT as a Lab Technician. She married and moved to Mount Uniacke where she and her husband still live in his family home. In the eighties, she retired from the IWK hospital to stay at home and raise their four children. She has painted periodically for years using oils and watercolors with Community School groups but only began painting earnestly in recent years primarily in acrylics under Lesly Benditsky, in Dartmouth. Noreen enjoys playing with color and loves to paint flowers and Maritime scenes.

Although the majority of our visual artists work in 2-D, Cara Sawka often creates soft sculptures that stray from the norm, including this piece, Pillow Talk. While attending Concordia University in Montreal for her Masters of Sculpture artist Rober Racine described her work as a choreography of sculpture (2006) leading her to identify herself as a choreographer of sculpture. Sawka has received assistance from the Saskatchewan Arts Board for several past projects, attended... international and Canadian artist residencies including the Banff Centre and continues to work independently. In 2015/16 Arts Nova Scotia awarded Cara funding to create the series entitled Circus of Life. Shore Hall Studio is currently a creative work space for artist Cara Sawka. A small retail shop within the studio, "Ditch Flower Gallery" opened in the summer of 2019. The gallery carries a range of works by Cara, artist Rory MacDonald, as well as a few guest artists. Join us tonight at The Bread Gallery to see these works in person.

What winter activities are you looking forward to this season? Sue Robinson has captured a quintessential Nova Scotian pastime in this piece from Long Winter Nights. Sue was born and educated in Montreal, Quebec and Lausanne, Switzerland and since 1970 has called Halifax, Nova Scotia home. She is very fortunate to have been raised surrounded by the natural beauty of Lake Champlain. As a result she is a lover of wilderness hiking and paddling. For many years she was an out ...trip instructor with the Duke of Edinburgh's program for senior youth. Much of her art is an expression of gratitude and appreciation for God's creations. She is delighted to be able to share her art with you, reflecting her love of wilderness adventures with paintings of nature in all its forms. Sue has endeavored to improve her skills with the assistance of accomplished instructors located in Lunenburg, Halifax and the Annapolis Valley, and through art conferences in both New Brunswick and Nova Scotia as well as in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New York States.

Here's another sneak peek from Long Winter Nights at The Bread Gallery from Summerville artist Kate Vasyliw. Kate is a visual artist working in numerous media (painting, drawing, printmaking, video, installation and performance). Vasyliw draws inspiration from the human condition and it’s foibles: exploring issues of self-identity, popular culture, gender and body image. Vasyliw is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design and the University of Guelph. Her work ha...s been presented in commercial and public galleries as well as non-traditional spaces. She is a member of the two-person art collective WeSee Inc. with Roy Kohn. Their work is themed around belief and societal peculiarities within the realms of popular media, superstitions and politics. As a co-director of Roadside Attractions, a storefront window gallery in Toronto, Vasyliw co-curated site specific exhibitions by Canadian and International artists. She has curated exhibitions of Inuit art from Cape Dorset, Nunavut and has given talks on contemporary Cape Dorset art in Canada and the USA. Currently she is working on a series of paintings based on demons, and has recently completed a video project inspired by conjoined twins. She continues to explore themes of self-identity and problem solving as her alter ego Katinka.

As we lead up to the opening of @ [400187717314093:844:Long Winter Nights] we are going to share a few sneak peeks from this year's collection. Local fibre artist @ [779665532:2048:Tacha Reed] of Woodland Wool has contributed 3 of her latest portraits, including this haunting tribute to David Berman. Working in the arts was always in the cards for Tacha Reed. After a childhood filled with time spent creating using what ever materials available, it was no surprise that by the ...age of seven she was firmly committed to living the life of an artist as she grew. After attending specialized art classes as a teen, Tacha began her post secondary education studying photography and digital imaging, before shifting her focus towards graphic design and printmaking, eventually receiving a BFA from the @ [115630861812958:274:NSCAD University] in 2003. Upon graduation Tacha began teaching art to elementary students, and for nearly two decades she has continued to work as a freelance photographer and designer, collaborating with many musicians, entrepreneurs and not-for-profit organizations. Since relocating to the tiny community of Ellershouse over a decade ago, Tacha’s artistic practice has grown to include the creation of tactile fine artworks and products that make use of natural and recycled materials. These days Tacha primarily creates using wool from local British milking sheep raised in Avondale, which she carefully hand dyes before transforming the fibre into vibrant felted wall hangings. After taking on the role of facility manager for the @ [127599430612690:274:Avon River Heritage] Museum in 2013, the tidal river that surrounds the historic waterfront park quickly became a continual source of inspiration for her artwork, especially evident in her recent felted series ADAPT, her graphic print Year of the Salmon, and the corresponding installation Ghost Salmon, which was placed along Simpson's Creek in Newport Landing this past June. When she's not creating, Tacha continues to pass along her skills and knowledge by leading fibre art workshops and demonstrations, and by actively volunteering with groups like @ [301945203161738:274:Avon River Arts] and the Full Circle Festival. Join us in the gallery Friday at 6pm for the launch of this year's showcase.
