Awaken Church 16.11.2020

You are invited to gather with us over zoom but we also have a little bit of space for a few people to safely gather in-person with masks on in our space. Whether we gather digitally or in person, we believe that gathering as a parish church in Bowness is important work. This year it's difficult to imagine feeling the wondrous anticipation that we usually lean into during Advent. It is unimaginable. Let's make holy space for our shared sense of the impossibility of it all a...nd perhaps the story will be more real to us this year than ever before. Nov 29th LAUGHING at God Dec. 6th Kerry Gladue from Simon House in Bowness will share about his personal encounter with God from within his prison cell and the Second Chance he was given Dec 13th we have the Awaken Kids Christmas Production and a personal story from the Hartley's Dec 20th we'll look at the book of Ruth and the love that brought Ruth and Naomi through an impossibly difficult circumstance. We are exhausted and discouraged from a year of hoping things get better when they seem to only get worse. Let's gather around the stories, new and old, of others who've struggled to imagine the Light that Comes and we will walk this road together in Bowness. See more

Nov. 8th Maddie McBlain opened the WORD to us in thought provoking ways. Why do bad things happen to good people and how come Proverbs, Job, and Ecclesiastes all have a different take on that conundrum? Maybe the Bible doesn't answer questions in case-closing ways but rather, invites us deeper into dialogue and community. We invite you to give it a listen and a comment on the episode so we can dialogue with YOU! https://theawakenpodcast.podbean.com/e/how-and-why-to-enga/

The prophetic speech is disruptive and piercing. His or her words are unbearable to King and Priest because you cannot serve both God and money, both God and power. You will hate one and love the other. So while we tend towards serving our own privilege and sacrificing to the god of the economy, the prophets weep and imagine a bitter end. Rather than revel in the anger and grief, however, the prophets have the tenacity to hope vigorously in an undoing of this world and the i...nbreaking of something radically new. Kara Boda Harvey and Michelle Edworthy lead us through the story of Deborah and Jael and into the Communion ceremony. This was an exceptionally beautiful opening of the scriptures for us all. Thank you Kara and Michelle!

This is the beginning of a new series on How and Why (and for Whom) to engage the scriptures. Nikayla gave this sermon on how to read the Law or the Pentateuch and she talks about how God choose the least of these from out of the dominant and dominating culture. The dominant culture did not and DOES not recognize this God or know this God's name. The Pentateuch is the stories of the "least of all people" being chosen by God, rescued by God, and established by God as a treasur...ed possession. The Law isn't only about morality or right behavior - it's about how to stay OUT of Pharaoh's throne, avoiding the trap of power, and how to stay within the shared memory; connected to the community and to the land. The LAW needs to be read through a Kingdom Lens and it needs to be read because the least of these continue to be unnoticed, unnamed, unfavored here in our city. We read it so that we might avoid the temptations of power and be people who remember. Anna leads us in communion after the sermon - thank you Anna for such a profound teaching. DISCUSSION: Read Exodus 1-5 and notice which characters have names and which characters don't have names. Who are God's people? Consider the gospels: Who are the people who recognized and trusted Jesus?
