Repost from @nataliegutierrezlmft Had to repost a post of mine from 2 years ago- back when I wasn’t officially trained in IFS but had been reading up and teac...hing myself until I could apply for a Level 1. And today, still rings true. Our parts, even our inner critic, as hella mean as it can be on the surface, really is caught in an extreme role with burdens trying to help you somehow. My inner critic carries legacy burdens around being behind and being critical of me when I wanted to rest because to rest meant I could miss an opportunity to learn something, read something. My inner critic deep down really just wants me to be the best version of myself, belong, and my strengths be witnessed. The unburdening work with my inner critic is multi-layered so there’s still work to do but we’re both invested in greater healing. . My old caption: An oldie but goodie of mine being resurfaced because 1. Many of us struggle with this and 2. Dialoguing with this part can shed so much light. Our inner critic isn’t meant to hurt us, ask it about its job and mission to protect you. - - - - - - Our inner critics are one of strongest voices/parts within us. They typically are born within us early on when you’re exposed to hurtful upbringings and painful messages about yourself, your competence, shaming messages, abuse, neglect, and systemic trauma. We internalize all these messages and develop parts that serve a purpose- usually to keep us safe in an unsafe environment. . When you’re noticing your inner critic beginning to chip away at your self esteem, take away your joy, keep you stuck, make you afraid, lie to you ask your inner critic these questions. Take a step back and actually consider what purpose it serves in your inner world. All our parts, however hurtful they may seem, serve a purpose and is connected to past painful learning. . The bodies of traumatized people portray "snapshots" of their unsuccessful attempts to defend themselves in the face of threat and injury. Trauma is a highly ac...tivated incomplete biological response to threat, frozen in time. For example, when we prepare to fight or to flee, muscles throughout our entire body are tensed in specific patterns of high energy readiness. When we are unable to complete the appropriate actions, we fail to discharge the tremendous energy generated by our survival preparations. This energy becomes fixed in specific patterns of neuromuscular readiness. The person then stays in a state of acute and then chronic arousal and dysfunction in the central nervous system. Traumatized people are not suffering from a disease in the normal sense of the word- they have become stuck in an aroused state. It is difficult if not impossible to function normally under these circumstances. Peter A. Repost from @mindful_tricks When we are born, we had no capacity to make ourselves feel safe. Our caregivers are fully responsible for meeting our basic needs... in order to help us gain a sense of safety. However, when this piece of our development is lacking, we are like a house without foundation. We go through life without the profoundly essential ability to take in the benefits of connection or to feel safe within. So we grow up taking on different adaptations to help us survive & feel safe like overworking, controlling & other adaptations in which our dysregulated nervous system tries to grasp a sense of safety. Most "mental health" problems are actually symptoms of our unhealed trauma & an attempt of our nervous system to restore safety. However, true safety is found when we release trauma and support our system's way into true safety. P.S. my self paced courses are 30% off for the next 48 hours (code FINALLYHEALING). You learn the science of healing, how to support your system to come to safety + tools to heal in each one of them. It’s equally important to recognize and acknowledge your signs of healing.

I have been reflecting a lot on boundaries especially during the pandemic. One area of Intentional boundaries include our digital relationship. Hmmm, this is one I can improve upon.

I shared this a few months ago but I wanted to share again in honor of #domesticviolenceawarenessmonth Trauma Bonding: A cycle of physical or emotional abuse th...at creates a strong attachment between an abused person and their abuser. Reinforced by periods of love and affection and then periods of devaluation and emotional abuse. See more
