Awenda Park 21.10.2021

A wet afternoon hike. Wendat Trail

Awenda Park 06.10.2021

A friend of mine just posted this and thought it a good idea to re-post it on my page. It reminds me of an incident back in July, I was compelled to say something to 2 groups of young men out for a fishing excursion on Georgian Bay off the point near beach 3 Awenda Park. It was dusk and the water was like glass. I saw 2 canoes, both boats with 3 paddlers each and 1 kayaker. None were wearing PFD’s. They were a good kilometre from shore and I felt it was my responsibility to r...emind them of boating safety. I’m not one for standing on a soapbox but this was necessary. The waters on Georgian are unpredictable at the best of times and being near the gap by Giants Tomb, the boat traffic is like the 400 highway. Waves can get 6 feet or more in a few minutes. I consider myself a beginner paddler, even though I’ve been paddling for 25 years, I feel like a novice on Georgian. I was expecting a go away old man and mind your own business response, but was pleasantly surprised by a respectful we didn’t know. I also told them these waters are regularly patrolled by the OPP and comes with a hefty fine ($200) for not wearing a PFD that’s Transport Canada approved, a water proof flashlight, bail bucket or bilge pump, floatable throw rope and whistles for each passenger. After I gave my little speech I paddled off knowing I did my due diligence, but they stayed for another 1/2 hour or so, it was dark by the time I got back to shore. 220 people died in Ontario in 2020 and most could have been prevented by wearing a PFD. The majority of the visitors to cottage country are city people and have no idea of the power and depth of these waters. See more

This one is probably closer to 16-18 feet long.

Found some row boats on the bottom of Kettles Lake. Apparently they’ve been there for 40 or so years. The first one was approximately 10-12 feet long.

Don’t sit in the house today. Get out and enjoy the snow. Won’t be lasting much longer.
