Crime Prevention week 01 November to 7th of November 2020 Aylmer Police Service would like to inform all Aylmer citizens that Ontario’s annual Crime Prevention Week will take place from November 1 to 7, 2020. In partnership with the Government of Ontario’s Ministry of the Solicitor General and the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police, Aylmer Police Service is reaching out to our community to offer crime prevention tips consistent with this year’s theme of; Serving Ontario,... Protecting Communities. In 2020, Aylmer Police Service investigated several on line fraud incidents and would like to offer following crime prevention tips: On-line fraud Cybercrimes are a growing area of crime, particularly on-line fraud. To protect yourself from becoming a victim, follow these simple tips; 1. Do not be intimidated by high-pressure sales tactics. If a telemarketer tries to get you to buy something or to send them money right away: Request the information in writing or hang up. Watch out for urgent pleas that play on your emotions. 2. Always verify that the organization you're dealing with is legitimate before you take any other action by doing the following: Verify Canadian charities with the Canada Revenue Agency Verify collection agencies with the appropriate provincial agency Look online for contact information for the company that supposedly called you, and call them to confirm Verify any calls with your credit card company by calling the phone number on the back of your credit card If you have received a call or other contact from a family member in trouble, talk to other family members to confirm the situation. Watch out for fake or deceptive ads, or spoofed emails. Always verify the company and its services are real before you contact them. 3. Beware of unsolicited calls where the caller asks you for personal information, such as: Your name Your address Your birthdate Your Social Insurance Number (SIN) Your credit card or banking information If you didn't initiate the call, you don't know who you're talking to. 4. Many scams request you to pay fees in advance of receiving goods, services, or a prize. It is illegal for a company to ask you to pay a fee upfront before they will give you a loan. Watch out for urgent-looking messages that pop up while you are browsing online. Do not click on them or call the number they provide. No legitimate company will call and claim your computer is infected with a virus. Some websites, such as music, game, movie, and adult sites, may try to install viruses or malware without your knowledge. Watch out for emails with spelling and formatting errors, and be wary of clicking on any attachments or links. They may contain viruses or spyware. Make sure you have anti-virus software installed and keep your operating system up to date. Never give anyone remote access to your computer. If you are having problems with your system, bring it to a local technician.

Aylmer Police service would like to remind all motorists that 2020 Festive RIDE campaign will commence this weekend and run until 3rd of Jan 2021. From 01 Jan 2020 to 26th of November 2020, Aylmer Police investigated 31 Incidents of suspected impaired driving cases resulting in 28 charges. In comparison to the same period in 2019, officers investigated 29 incidents and laid 18 charges, an increase of 56%. The increase is attributed to the vigilance and dedication of the offi...cers to road safety and reduction of serious collision involving impaired drivers. The 2020-21 campaign will continue to focus on the 'zero tolerance' approach by the officers and we encourage every motorist to adopt to that principle every time they get behind the wheel. Officers will continue to utilize Mandatory Alcohol Screening and will be increasing this practice during the Festive RIDE season. Now heading into its third year, under the Mandatory Alcohol Screening law, an officer with an approved alcohol-screening device can demand a breath sample from any driver without having reasonable suspicion that they have alcohol in their body. Officers will also be observing for motorists who are impaired by drugs. Aylmer Police Officers are fully trained in Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) and we have an officer who is trained as a Drug Recognition Expert. This expertise furthers our ability to detect impaired drivers. Citizens are encouraged to report incidents of impaired driving on our roadways. The dedication of our front line officers in partnership with our citizens and motorists, I am certain that collectively we can make our roadways safe for all to enjoy during this holiday season and throughout the year. Fraud: On 23rd of July 2020 at 10:49 pm. Aylmer police received a complaint from a 62 year old Aylmer resident reporting an attempted $4000.00 fraud. Investigation revealed that a male purporting to be a visa representative called her advising that her credit card was compromised during Amazon purchases. The male attempted to get the victim to complete the transaction by instructing her to purchase google play cards and bitcoins. Fortunately, the female contacted her banking ...institution who were able to block the transaction resulting in no money lost. Frauds such as this are on the rise and residents are reminded that; Scammers often pretend to be someone you trust, like a government official, a family member, a charity, or a company you do business with. Do not send money or give out personal information in response to an unexpected request whether it comes as a text, a phone call, or an email. Technology makes it easy for scammers to fake caller ID information, so the name and number you see are not always real. If someone calls asking for money or personal information, hang up. If you think the caller might be telling the truth, call back to a number you know is genuine. Someone might ask you to pay in advance for things like debt relief, credit and loan offers, mortgage assistance, or a job. They might even say you have won a prize, but first you have to pay taxes or fees. If you do, they will probably take the money and disappear. Before you give up your money or personal information, talk to someone you trust. Con artists want you to make decisions in a hurry. They might even threaten you. Slow down, check out the story, do an online search, consult an expert or just tell a friend. If you answer the phone and hear a recorded sales pitch, hang up. These calls are illegal, and often the products are bogus. Do not press one to speak to a person or to be taken off the list. That could lead to more calls. Review your monthly statements for charges you do not recognize. See more
