Water Safety Tips Prepare and Stay Safe! Boating can be a very fun and enjoyable activity for people of all ages in the spring and summer months. Just like swimming, boats of all kinds and sizes are a great water activity for families. However, as a Red Cross Swim Instructor, it is important to teach swimmers of all ages and skill how to be a safe boater; especially those who are developing their swimming skills. Many younger swimmers may often think that just because they ar...e not directly in the water while boating, many of the safety rules and facility checks no longer apply. This is why one of my favorite techniques when instructing swimmers is to go over and remind them of all their water safety skills while discussing how to be a safe boater and not let these skills be forgotten. It is important to remind swimmers that, even when on a boat they are still around water, and incidents can occur if proper safety skills are not followed. When boating all individuals need to: 1) Put on an appropriate size lifejacket prior to going on or in a boat 2) Discuss why having a whistle attached to their lifejacket is important in case they need to signal for help 3) Enter the boat one person at a time and ensure the boat is stable and not overloaded 4) Avoid standing in the boat or leaning over the edge 5) Exit the boat slowly, one at a time, while in a stable position and; 6) Identify when and where it is safe to go boating, listing potential hazards and always having adult permission and supervision By doing this, all swimmers can enjoy a fun activity in water while importantly, being a safe boater at all times. As always, stay safe and enjoy the water! Nathan Ayres Aquatics

https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/parents-with-pools-urged-to-care The struggle is not at the surface. You don't get a lot of splashing or calling for help. These kids can slip under the water and the parents may not even see them," "The survey also found that in 25 per cent of backyard pool-related drownings, adults were present but distracted."... Important article discussing the importance of proper adult supervision around water, especially backyard pools. Keep enjoying the water and as always stay safe! Nathan Ayres Aquatics

Water Safety Tips Prepare and Stay Safe! We know that swimming can be an exciting and fun experience for swimmers of all ages, especially with younger swimmers who are quickly learning new skills and confidence in the water. However, with this new confidence and loss of fear. facility and site orientation is especially important to teach swimmers; especially as they progress through the Red Cross program. It is very important that at different swim facilities and pools, we di...scuss the importance of: 1) Identifying shallow water and deep water 2) Why adult supervision needs to be followed around water 3) Potential hazards in different swimming areas, and 4) Why swimmers should always follow their instructor's permission to enter the water. When teaching swim lessons, I always find it best for the instructor and parent to work in partnership to best teach swimmers these safety skills. Lastly, self-safety is another important aspect when it comes to water safety as swimmers progress in their skills. All swimmers need to recognize and know how to avoid dangerous situations around water, such as: 1) Knowing how far they can safely swim a distance and be able to swim and return to safety 2) Determining hazards that should be avoided at all times in the water, and 3) Obeying all safety signs and rules at different swim sites and facilities Through proper facility and site orientation, we can keep all swimmers safe while also teaching them the importance of being mindful of adhering to their water safety skills every time they are around different sites of water. As always, stay safe and enjoy the water! Nathan Ayres Aquatics
