Happy Birthday! On October 31st, 1911 the Carnegie Library of Ayr opened its doors. The story of Mr. Carnegie and the village of Ayr began December 24th, 1909 when the board of the Farmers' and Mechanics' institute of Ayr received a grant of $5,200 from the Carnegie Foundation. Ayr was the smallest of the 111 communities in Ontario to receive a grant. Mr. Carnegie believed that public libraries was the best way to realize his goal of free education for all, and that lite...racy would be the greatest tool for those in small communities. Throughout his lifetime, Mr. Carnegie’s philanthropic activities saw him donate $56 million ($1.534 billion today) which resulted in the building of 2,509 public libraries throughout the world. In total he donated over $350 million towards various education costs. In my youth I was fortunate to have the books that were housed within this building to take me on many adventures. Today our family is privileged to be stewards of Mr. Carnegie's legacy. See more
