Turmeric Did you know that turmeric can be drying, depending on your constitution? If you have a Kapha prakriti is ok. A Pitta or Vata prakriti can also use turmeric but may want to take it will a lipid , like ghee or milk. As most people know, the addition of black peeper increases absorption. Do you know why?? In Ayurveda it is because black pepper helps Agni. ... Also in Ayurveda, curcumin , the isolate molecule from turmeric is not useful to the body. Use whole food as much as possible to get all the best benefits.

Ayurveda and Juicing. With the North American obsession with juicing I thought it would be good to give the Ayurveda perspective. Ayurveda sees fresh juices as heavy and hard to digest. We advisee having no more than 1-2 ounces of fresh juice at a time, if you want to keep your agni healthy and no disturb digestion

In this webinar, Dr Karthik will continue from his Part One webinar into Part Two of the tridoshic principles. In Part Two he will enlighten you on the Universe and the three doshas. Ayurveda is a science of Self-understanding. By understanding your own unique nature or constitution, you can begin to understand how you interact with your environment, the universe, and every aspect of our lives. and thus make choices that will lead you toward greater health. Ayurveda defines ...disease as the natural end result of living out of harmony with one’s constitution. Our constitution is the inherent balance of energies within our bodies and our minds. It describes who you are on the most fundamental level. This unique balance of energy determines everything from our bone structure to our predisposition toward certain health challenges. Our constitution defines what we are naturally attracted to as well as what repels us. It defines what is in harmony with our nature and what will cause us to move out of balance and experience sickness and disease. Because we all have a different balance of energy, Ayurveda shows that the path to optimal health is different for each person depending upon their constitution. See more

The concept of Vyadhiksamatva (immunity) is of tremendous importance in the daily wellness of human beings; for prevention and recovery from diseases. Ayurveda has a unique approach to immunity. It states that various factors contribute towards vyadhikshamatva. They include a normal doshas, equilibrium state of dhatus, normal agni, patency of srotas etc. This tells us that immunity is not just about being resistant to a virus or bacteria but about our ability to sustain our h...ealth when anything unwholesome arises. During certain conditions or due to certain factors even unwholesome (ahitakara) dietary practices do not produce disease immediately. All unwholesome (ahitekar) food articles are not equally harmful, all doshas are not equally powerful; all persons are not equally capable of resisting diseases Vyadhikshamatva helps to achieve the aim of Ayurveda When etiological factors come in contact with the body they try to produce disease. At the same time the body tries to resist the disease. This power of the body, which prevents the development of diseases or resists a developed disease, is called Vyadhikshamatva ,Immunity. Summer is Pitta. Pitta elements are Fire and Water and we are embarked on a long, hot and humid Pitta season. In the hot summer you are especially prone to accumulating excess pitta. If your dosha is predominantly Pitta, you are at an even higher risk of becoming out of balance because Like increases Like = Hot increases Heat. Tempers rise with the humidity and temperature. Even if you have less Pitta in your Prakriti, you may find that you need to take steps to pacify Pi...tta to stay balanced and healthy. Transformation is the main function of the Pitta dosha. Pitta is the heat that drives your digestive system, metabolism, and glandular functions. The stomach, liver, skin, heart and eyes are primary locations of Pitta in your body. Pitta is also responsible for sensory perception, discrimination and precision thinking. By its fiery nature, Pitta is intense, purposeful and passionate. Out of balance the above attributes of Pitta will be weakened or over active. Though Pitta is aggravated in summer, elevated Pitta can occur at any time, look for these signs of aggravated Pitta: Skin irritations, any burning sensations, aggression, acid indigestion, anger, excessive sweating, hypertension, diarrhea, irritability, fever, blurred vision, inflammation, and impatience. Suppressing The Urge To Sleep- This includes Staying up Late Suppressing the urge to sleep causes symptoms like repeated yawning, body aches, loss of attentiveness, heavy headedness, deranged mental functions and heaviness of the eyes. It results in the aggravation of Vata and Kapha Dosha. Adequate sleep is regarded as one of the pillars of health by Ayurveda. The other two pillars are food and a disciplined behavior in all spheres of life. Sleep deprivation over a long perio...d of time is a major cause of Vata aggravation and can lead to Vata disorders like arthritis. Once sleep is deprived and Vata gets aggravated, the body as a defense produces more of Kapha leading to Kapha aggravation. Hence we see symptoms due to both Vata and Kapha aggravation in the short term. But in regular sleep deprivation for a prolonged period Vata aggravation rules. Treatment of disorders arising out of suppression of the urge to sleep These disorders can be treated by simply going to sleep! But it is not as simple as that. Sometimes the Vata or rPitta gets aggravated so much that the person is not able to sleep. So in these cases, Ayurveda advocates that somebody should give a gentle Abyhanaga and shirodhara. Suppressing The Urge To Quench Thirst Suppressing the urge to drink water causes features related to dehydration. The mouth and throat become parched, hearing is lost and tiredness develops. There is a loss of function of the brain and heart ailments like cardiovascular shock or precipitation of heart attack become possible as the blood becomes thickened. Practically speaking these are symptoms encountered during acute dehydration, as with the inability to get or hold water d...ue to vomiting and/or diarrhea. Otherwise your thirst center makes sure that you get thirsty according to the needs of the body. In this regard it was quite intelligent of the ancient proponents of Ayurveda to have mentioned loss of brain function and heart ailments as a possible outcome of inadequate fluid intake. Suppression of the urge to quench the thirst results in the aggravation of Vata initially and Pitta later. With the ear being one of the important sites of Vata, hearing loss is one of the symptoms encountered early on. The over consumption of water is also important to note. Wee live in a society that carries water bottles everywhere. The quench the thirst is a function of listening to thee body. It will tell you when to drink but we use our mind to make that decision when it should be our body. Your prakrriti age, season and exercise routine will determine how much water is needed. vata will need more water due to the dyness in the prakritti and Kapha will need less water due to the water element in the Prakriti. Pitta water consumption wil be determined by the fire element. Erica Mueller

As we greet the New Year, let us remember that all challenges to our health and well-being come from a state of low Ojas. Ojas is the foundation of our ability to love to be loved; it is that which sustains, stabilizes, and nourishes us. This year, let us commit to improving our Ojas, our health, and our well-being by nourishing ourselves and opening our hearts to being able to love and be loved. As we do so, our new state of health and wellness will be reflected in the world, and there will be greater peace, greater love, and greater joy for all of humanity Best wishes from the AAC Board and Staff to all our professional members, enthusiasts, students, and teachers of Ayurveda

The World Health Organisation (WHO) announced on Friday that it will set up a Global Centre for Traditional Medicine in India, with Prime Minister expressing confidence that just like the country has emerged as the ‘pharmacy of the world’, the WHO institution will become the centre for global wellness. WHO director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus made the announcement in a video message at an event in which Prime Minister Modi inaugurated two Ayurveda institutions in Jaipu...r and Jamnagar via a video conference on the occasion of the 5th Ayurveda Day. I am pleased to announce that we have agreed to open a WHO Global Centre for Traditional Medicine in India to strengthen the evidence, research, training and awareness of traditional and complementary medicine, Ghebreyesus said. This new centre will support WHO’s efforts to implement the WHO traditional medicine strategy 2014-2023 which aims to support countries in developing policies and action plans to strengthen the role of traditional medicine as part of their journey to universal health coverage and a healthier, fairer and safer world, he said. It is a matter of pride for all Indians that the WHO has chosen India for establishing its Global Centre for Traditional Medicine. Now work will be done in this direction from India, Modi said.
