Alberta's extreme weather a tattoo can go from good to bad with one Chinook and freeze! Not enough aftercare and the tattoo may crack and damage, too much afte...rcare cuts off the air for the tattoo to heal. Here is the best way we recommend aftercare: Recommended Tattoo Aftercare Wash your hands prior to touching you tattoo. Recommended removal of bandage within 2-3 hours then gently wash tattoo with a mild antibacterial soap, hot water and only your hand - be sure to remove all traces of blood, ointment and secretions. Pat the tattoo dry with a new, clean paper towel. Repeat every 2-3 hours for the next 24 hours. (Do not reapply new bandage). After 24 hours, begin applying SMALL amounts of unscented, water-based, dye-free lotion (Lubriderm, Eucerin, H2Ocean, etc.) in a thin later AS NEEDED (check for necessity every hour or so) - if the area is shiny or sticky, you're using too much lotion (remembering to wash your hands before each application). Continue washing as stated above 2-3 times daily. You want to keep the tattoo slightly moist to prevent scabbing - you want the tattoo to "flake off" or "peel" similar to a sunburn. Keep you tattoo out of direct sunlight and tanning beds to 7-10 days. Use sunscreen of at least SPF50 now and for the life of your tattoo to prevent fading. Do not go swimming (pool, lake or ocean) or soak in a hot tub/spa until tattoo is completely healed. Showers are fine. Chemicals like chlorine and the bacteria found in most lakes will cause the tattoo to fade or cause an infection. Soaking the tattoo will also cause the scab to come off faster and along with it, some of the ink. You tattoo should form a thin, dry layer that will begin peeling/flaking off in the first 7-10 days and should be completely healed in 2-3 weeks. Do not touch or pick the developing scabs. Like any other wound to the skin, your tattoo will itch during the healing process. DO NOT SCRATCH IT. Scratching or picking will remove the scab and possibly some of the color from the tattoo. You may apply lotion onto the tattoo to relieve the itching, or a light tapping/slapping on and/or around the tattoo, just be sure to have clean hands first. Signs & symptoms of infection include but are not limited to: severe redness, swelling, tenderness of the procedure site, red streaks going from the procedure site towards the heart, elevated body temperature or purulent drainage from the procedure site. Discharge from site may be green to yellow in color and foul in odor. Contact our tattoo shop and seek medical care if any signs or symptoms of infection develop. (403) 870 0370
