Babe Ruth & the 1927 Yankees have the Best Summer Ever 22.10.2021

An article by I.N.S. Correspondent Les Conklin appeared on this date in 1927. "With interest in the pennant race practically killed by the Yankees' repeated successes, American League fans today turned their attention to the Ruth-Gehrig duel. Gehrig pickled a homer yesterday in St. Louis and is again tied with the Babe." Note that Lou's homer - his sixth of the month next to Ruth's five - was hit against St. Louis ... the Bronx Bombers did rather well against the Browns tha...t year. Here's a quick excerpt from "Babe Ruth & the 1927 Yankees Have the Best Summer Ever." The conversation takes place before the Yanks' last game against St. Louis. Twenty-one straight over the Browns, Richards Vidmer pointed out after the game. Think they can make it a season sweep tomorrow? asked James Harrison. They just tied the all-time record with that win, said Vidmer. Some numbers fanatic at the paper looked it up for me. The Cubs beat the Braves twenty-one out of twenty-two in ’09. You gotta figure the Browns are due, said Harrison. Maybe they should skip batting practice tomorrow morning and go to church instead.

The Red Sox Were No Worry in ‘27 On this rainy date in 1927 the Yanks enjoyed a rare day off. They stood eleven and a half games ahead of the Senators and were eighteen and a half up on the third-place Tigers. Their seventy-six wins included a four-game sweep of Boston at the end of June. They would beat the Red Sox eighteen times in twenty-two attempts in ’27. The only team they hammered harder were the St. Louis Browns, whom they beat twenty-one straight times before finall...y losing to them in the last match they played. The Babe grabbed an umbrella that day and headed to the Bank of Manhattan with Christy Walsh, pictured below, who had finally convinced him to plan for his retirement by setting up a $50,000 trust fund. The Yankees would be in New York just one day in the next month. It was a streaky road trip that featured five straight wins followed by a remarkable (for them) four straight losses and then a more believable eight consecutive wins. See more

Judge and Stanton smacked back-to-back homers in the 13th inning to beat the Blue Jays last night. It was Judge's 18th and Stanton's 14th. The win kept the Yankees within a game of Boston. Having sent all of their stars to New York, Harry Frazee's Red Sox were a laughing stock in 1927. But on this date in '27 the White Sox, led by their aces Tommy Thomas and Ted Lyons, who would tie Waite Hoyt for most wins, came to the Bronx just a game and a half behind the Yanks. The Chica...gos had won 12 of their last 14 games. (Excerpt from "Babe Ruth & the 1927 Yankees have the Best Summer Ever") "Thomas took the mound for Chicago. He got through the Yankee lineup without difficulty the first time around, but, as so often happened, the second time through the Yankee sluggers had seen what was working for the starter and, more importantly, what was not and they knew what to expect. In the fourth inning Ruth and Gehrig lined back-to-back homers. As usual the Babe’s was a towering fly that dropped deep into the right field bleachers and Lou’s was a wicked liner into the front rows. Fans stood up and admired the height and length of Ruth’s towering homers and hoped to catch them. They dove out of the way of Gehrig’s." The Yankees won it 4-1. The next day the White Sox led 11-6 when the nearby factory whistles blew. They were the cue for Five O'Clock Lightning to strike. "Poosh 'Em Up" Tony Lazzeri hit the third of his three homers that afternoon in a five-run eighth inning and Murderers' Row won 12-11. The Yankees won again the next day and the demoralized White Sox left town four games back. Miller Huggins finally got some sleep that night. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fehFOZTcNw4
