Stress and anxiety are natural bodily responses, and while often uninvited, they can be influenced through meditation. We invite you to try the 5-7-8 technique - a tool to reboot your inner mind and take a step away from the anxious mind. Through practice, this can become a useful tool to calm the body and the mind! Try it now5-7-8 breathing... First, let your lips part. Make a whooshing sound, exhaling completely... through your mouth. Close your mouth and inhale through your nose with a mental count to four Hold your breath for seven seconds Exhale through your mouth with another whoosh sound until a count of eight is reached Repeat the pattern several times and notice the subtle differences in your mind and body as you observe the change. Are there any other breathing mantras that help you? Last Thursday marked the first day back to school for most children here in B.C. The re-opening after months of closure during a global pandemic has caused an increase in anxiety for parents. Masks, learning groups, and social distanced classrooms? This new normal has parents confused as to whether this is the correct step forward for them and their family. Each family is dealing with their own response and the diversity within their own community. Some families are finding... alternative options such as homeschooling. For others, this simply is not an option. Others are satisfied with the current return to school plan. Now parents are making difficult decisions while they reflect on and consider what is best for their own family. First and foremost it takes courage to get clear about what you believe is best. This can be uncomfortable, only you are equipped to make the right decision regardless of your neighbour's or friend's perspective of the situation. These 6 steps are proven to engage your parasympathetic nervous system. When your parasympathetic nervous system is activated, it produces a calm and relaxed feeling. You can change your state through these steps anytime you choose to do so. Practice helps for sure! This year we have faced the complexity of a pandemic, political unrest, socio-economic uncertainty, and a diverse set of other related stressors all at the same time. Many of the associated life changes have been out of our control. Increased discomfort and anxiety are a normal response to lack of control and certainty. Your flight, fight and freeze response has been on high-alert this year, have you incorporated any of these steps this year? You and your significant other have been through a lot this year, from dealing with Covid-19, lockdown, quarantine and for some even unemployment - this year has been tough. It is important that you work on your relationship especially during these tough times. Here are six ways that you can make an effort in your relationship now: Prioritizing time together: This reminds your partner that they matter to you. Within a week, spend time with your partner doing something you m...utually enjoy or trying out something new. Daily check-ins: Healthier couples make time to check-in with one another on a regular basis with each other. Share personal subjects beyond parenting and household tasks. Listen to your partners personal perspectives and feelings. This will help you stay connected to your partner over the long haul. Put your phone down: Turn off your notifications when you get home from work. When you see your spouse, with your actions, send them the message that they are your priority. Listen: Let go of your thoughts while you focus on what your partner is saying. Ask questions to further understand their perspective. Actively practicing empathy is another way you communicate to your partner that you care. Stay engaged with Kindness: Conflict comes up in all relationships but its how we deal with that conflict that determines the health of our relationship. Research shows that anger and contempt are linked to higher rates of divorce. Couples that resort to criticism, yelling or withdrawing from the discussion are more likely to break up, staying engaged with respect is key to the health of your relationship. When should couples seek help? All relationships have their ups and downs but some factors such as finances, parenting, and mental health are often the subject of recurring conflicts. Repeated versions of the same arguments over and over are a sign that it might be time to visit a couples counsellor, visit our website to book your virtual appointment today: http://www.bachcounselling.com/contact-us #relationships #relationshipadvice #couplegoals #spouse #CouplesCounseling #makinganeffort #engagement #lessscreentime #prioritize

Your thoughts are the source of your emotions and mood, which makes them extremely important. The conversations you have with yourself can be destructive or beneficial, they influence how you feel about yourself and how you respond to your everyday life. Although self-talk can come naturally to some, others have to cultivate positive thoughts and learn to block out their negative thought process. Some people often experience rumination which is the replaying of negative thoug...hts, or upsetting situations, in your mind over and over again. Take a moment now to think about what you have said to yourself today. Was it critical or was it kind? Now reflect on how you felt after this self-discussion. Now say something positive to yourself. It may be a good job for something you accomplished today. In the comments below lets spread this positivity, tag your friend, and write something positive that you feel should be incorporated into their self-talk. #selftalk #selftalkmatters #selfesteemboost #quotestoliveby #selfloved #selfcaredaily #anxious #anxietysupport #mentalhealthawareness

Any major loss in our lives affects our emotional stability as humans. As these feelings are unexpected, they can be threatening for us. We may be surprised by them and in turn avoid them - not validating how we really feel in the present moment. In her research, psychiatrist Elizabeth Kubler Ross found we go through 5 stages of grief. Denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. Anger can mask our grief in its struggle and its attempt to push away the reality of our loss. If you need help dealing with grief, loss or trauma, Bach Counselling Group is here to help. Many of our recent life changes due to the pandemic have been out of our control. This has raised our awareness and invited us to reflect on our values and what is and what is not working in our lives. This uncertainty has challenged and tested our resilience. Resilience is the ability to cope and thrive in the face of adversity. Resiliency is the ability to use challenges to foster strength and even prosperity. Resiliency is not just about accepting struggles and making mis...takes, but rather its about a willingness to lean into challenges, reach out for help, and learn from the difficult times. Being resilient helps you bring your attention to the present of what you can control so that, in turn, your decisions with respect to stress are more rewarding. Take a moment now to take note of and acknowledge where you have been resilient in the recent months. #resiliency #thoughtsoftheday #mondaythoughts #quoteoftheday #beresilient #counselling #selfcare #wellbeing

Are you feeling challenged as a parent this year? Parenting can be challenging at the best of times! Now, many parents are finding themselves at home, working remotely and attempting to parent and school their children all at the same time! Im hearing parents struggle to manage all of these daily demands. They are reporting their anxiety is up, their self-care is down and many are troubled. While any given daily event or life circumstance may cause discomfort, our minds can... amplify our suffering. Armed with stories of the past or worries of the future, our thoughts remove us from the present often leaving us anxious and much less able to effectively cope with what is currently before us. Gaining awareness of our thoughts and how they influence our state in this new and bizarre reality is key to calming the mind. Our new blog post on "Mindful Parent, Mindful Child. 7 Tips for Parenting in 2020" just went live - for advice on parenting during these challenging times, give it a read! Click the link in our bio. It is normal to not feel happy all of the time, what positivity really means is welcoming challenges, setbacks, and emotions without judgement. These times are challenging to say the least. During challenging times our minds create a story that feeds into a fear that projects more distress about the future. Ask yourself how often you use catastrophic language like, always or never. And when you do, experiment with re-label your thoughts, My anxious story. Then draw your attention back to the present moment and ask yourself what you know to be true right now. What is the reality? Ask the question Am I safe at... this moment? This will cultivate a greater degree of awareness of how the story is running in your mind and how, it, not necessarily reality, is influencing your state. We can decide whether to frame and interpret challenges with fear and overwhelming language or with a different story that incorporates our strength and perseverance. The International Self-Care Day, 24 July, symbolises that the benefits of self-care are experienced 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In other words, the benefits of self-care are life-long and do not just relate to a single day. With a house full of kids, family life can sometimes seem chaotic. Amid this, taking mindful breaks to re-center will make a huge difference. Recognizing that you are escalated or stressed is the first step. Removing yourself is equally as important to ...ensure that you get to communicate effectively and with kindness. You dont need to wait for a holiday or retreat for a timeout. Even a few minutes alone in a room away from others will have a positive impact. This is a reminder to take your personal time-out today with presence.
