The government has announced that group music classes are now allowed to resume in Alberta. WAHOOOOOOOOOOO! This means that our rock bands, Little Beats and Bigger Beats classes are now able to resume for in-person rehearsals and classes. In-person rock band rehearsals will start this Thursday (March 11). ... In-person Bigger Beats classes will start next week (week of March 15). In-person Little Beats classes will start next week (week of March 15). We understand that not everyone will want to come back to in-person programming. You are welcome to continue participating in your rock band virtually. For Bigger Beats, we can accommodate up to two virtual participants per class as well. About one year after opening our doors, our bands had the opportunity to perform on the HMV Stage at West Edmonton Mall. It was awesome. It was fun. It was LOUD. We're back at it tomorrow! It's admittedly not the way we would have liked or imagined it to be, but we will be together even if not in-person. All of our private lessons, rock bands and group guitar classes will remain online for the month of January. Our reason for making this call is based on what we feel is the safest option for our Backbeat families and staff at this time. With all of us continuing to do our part in bringing COVID numbers down, we are optimistic that ...we will be able to resume in-person programming the week of February 1. The start dates for our next round of Bigger Beats classes have also been postponed to the week of February 1. We hope to resume and complete the Little Beats classes that were disrupted in November on January 28/30 as long as government restrictions allow. It's not a family selfie unless there's a whopping snow man in it. What. A. Year. We have never tag-team parented more. We didn't know what dried skin was until we started baptizing our hands in hand sanitizer 1,363 times a day. If constraints really do help creativity to flourish, well then folks, we're at the next level. We've never had to adapt our adaptions of our most recent adaptions which we made based on the latest restrictions, which were also just recently adapted..., more. We've also experienced incredibly wonderful moments this past year. Moments of kindness. Generosity. Support. The parent whose son takes lessons on Mondays, but asked that we NOT give her the statutory holiday discount. A landlord who has been understanding and generous. Our immediate families coming around us and their willingness to listen, listen, listen. Neighbours who have become like family. Fellow small business friends whose words of encouragement mean so much because we know they're fighting the same fight. Our incredible staff who have adapted from teaching in-person, to teaching online, to teaching with masks and plexiglass back to teaching online... What. A. Year. Why give once when you can give TWICE? 100% of the proceeds from these rad T-shirts goes to support @yessorg - an organization that exists to help youth on their journey of healing. These uber cool T-shirts were the brainchild of one our students, 13 year-old Will Bourdeau. Will's been drawing since he could hold pencil. He first got into art by watching his older brother, Vincent. Will started by drawing cartoons and eventually got into doodle art, which he describes as "a... bunch of mini cartoons inside a bigger cartoon." Will decided to use his creativity for good this past spring when COVID hit. "I used to get a lot of inspiration [for my art] from going places and travelling, but COVID has taken away a lot of that. So my dad and I talked about other ways that I could re-focus my art during this time. That's when we came up with the idea of designing a T-shirt for Backbeat that could be used to benefit a local charity." 100% of the proceeds from Will's T-shirt sales will go to support Y.E.S.S. "Set up any old thing." - Neil Peart (interview with CBC, November 13, 2014) Peart was the infamous drummer for Canadian rock band Rush and was known for playing with 30+ pieces in his kit. Known as one of the best drummers of all time, he often started with a basic four piece set-up and then things went crazy from there. Peart wrote many of the bands lyrics and took his inspiration from sci-fi, fantasy and mythology. Peart passed away earlier this year after a fight with br...ain cancer. On an equally iconic, and somewhat ironic, level is lead singer and bass player for the band: Geddy Lee. Lee originally wanted to be a guitarist. But in his early days, a band he was playing for at the time, told him he had to play bass when their bass player left. He thought it was ironic that "no one wanted to play bass" so he stuck with it. Alex Lifeson (guitarist, Rush) first met Geddy Lee at Fisherville Junior High. His teachers described Lifeson as being "very likeable, fun and level-headed." Lee was more quiet and studious. As he was leaving Monday night, one of our Backbeat dads looked us in the eye and said Whatever you decide, we’re with you. We repeated these words to ourselves as we navigated the unknown earlier this week. And we’re repeating them to ourselves now as we navigate the days ahead in light of yesterday’s announcement. We feel it’s important to do what we can to help limit the spread and have therefore decided that all lessons, rock bands and group classes will be offered ex...clusively online effective Friday, November 27. We have decided to maintain online only until the new year. While we feel this is the right thing to do at this time, we want you to know that some tears were shed while making this decision. Right sure as heck doesn’t mean easy. We’re really going to miss seeing you all in-person. You’ve all brought such incredible energy, joy and encouragement to us these last few months. Behind this flying mass of hair is a brilliant mind. George (aka the "flying mass of hair") wasn't able to attend his rock band practice in-person this week. All of our bands are going hard right now trying to record and present the music they've been working on these last few months. George knows that he has some pretty important guitar parts that his band needs. So what does he do? He records all of his guitar parts in perfect form and sends them to his band pre-rehearsal ...so they can play along to them during practice. This allows his band to jam and record their songs, with all the parts, even though George wasn't there in-person. We love this get 'er done attitude! Thanks, George! The Empress was an authentic place for inclusive community and great live music. It hasn't been the easiest past few days. And as we look to the winter ahead, it's tempting to let out a collective "UGH." Something that often helps us reframe and refocus is looking outside ourselves. Seeing how we might be able to help someone else out. He lets out a deep breath as he bends down to tie his shoes. He had just finished rehearsing with a rock band for the first time. That was tough, he said, I didn’t know any of the songs and I’ve never played any of the riffs before. Another sigh. I don’t know if I can do this. I mean, I’m literally shaking a bit inside. He’s not the first to feel this way. And he won’t be the last. But we know how this story can end. So we look him in the eye and say We hear you and w...e get it. You just jumped into the deep end. But the thing is, you were willing to take the jump. Not everyone is. Making the jump is what counts. You’re right, today’s practice was full of unknowns. A lot of new. But you showed up. You made it through. We know you CAN learn the songs. We know you CAN master those riffs. We know YOU CAN DO THIS. Just keep showing up. Fast forward a few weeks. He’s shown up. No more deep sighs or shaky feels. He’s starting to realize HE CAN. And HE WILL.
