Why eat half burnt bannock when you can have fresh trout? I’m contemplating another zoom canoe trout fishing master class next weekend if there is enough interest. Let me know if you want in. #foodbarrelfriday #heresyourfoodbarrel Paddle In

A fast light canoe, a few simple things and a map. That is all it that is required to avoid the busyness of this.

This is a really cool thing for folks planning canoe trips in Algonquin. Drew Czernik is a paddler who has a really well written and funny blog. He’s linked his trip blogs to google maps. Follow him All of Algonquin.

At least part of my time in winter is spent working on improving our canoes. Here’s a sneak peak at a new 2021 solo boat yoke. Our current cantilever yoke works great, but it’s a bit heavy. I’ve included a pic for reference. The new yoke is appreciably stronger and comes in at under a pound, but still maintains the tool-less one piece, simple as possible design.

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner Here are some great reasons why you should order this shirt: It’s educational.... It’s kinda nerdy but in a good way. It’s a little dirty. It’s supports a boat maker, a boat makers kids, and a boat makers dog. Goes nice with over priced flannel. All the cool kids have them. Looks cool under a pfd. See more

2020 Trout project (vlog to follow) The concept of this trip really crystallized 3 years ago while doing some exploratory trout fishing in some spring fed lakes somewhere between Timmins and Guelph. I’ve been hosting group trips for 20yrs or so and chasing brookies twice as long, to host a group brookie trip you need a cluster of small lakes rather than one to spread the pressure out and adjust for local conditions. Its crowned land and grouse season so, we set the trip... in early October to avoid the opening week grouse crowd and fish for coloured up prespawn brookies. Because the regular trout season is closed all the fishing takes place in small portage too stocked lakes that are opened year round. Although it was originally planned as a hosted trout school we scaled the group and the project down to family more or less in our bubble There is so much to love about these sort of trips. But the real charm of them for me is to have the opportunity to sight fish for individual big brookies from a canoe. The idea of actually seeing a big Brookies in super clear water & positioning the canoe for a cast at them, watching them follow and hopefully take is insanely fun for a simple dude like me. So, after researching 67 lakes and scouting 25 or so here’s the interm report on how it went this year even with unstable cold conditions... 10 Ruffed Grouse (many many more released) 60 Brook trout (average size 14) only injured fish kept. 8 rainbows (average size 13) 5 got eaten up. 4 lakes fished and 6 scouted for future exploration. I rotate these camps annually to reduce pressure on each area. The project also includes a summer scouting trip or two to evaluate the population in potential lakes, already looking forward to the 2021 project;) If you want more info I’ll be reviving the fishing seminars this winter, so follow my FB stuff closely, they sell out quickly.
