I have seen many posts recently talking of releasing the hyoid and the ways to best do so. Even the concept that it can be done with a bit. Yet again this shed...s light on why tensegrity matters and why we can’t limit our thought process when it comes to body mechanics and Kinetic connections. Nothing in the body functions alone to achieve good long lasting release all the connections and structures affected need to be considered, all tissue and its functions need to evaluated. Local limited release it temporary and ineffective. The hyoid is not an independent structure we cannot release it on its own. It is the visceral indicator of the body in addition to all muscular and fascial connections it holds. If there is congestion with the visceral system no amount of pulling on the tongue or working in the mouth will suffice in order to release it. It is vital to understand how the hyoid is connected to the lungs, the diaphragm and the internal organs. Releasing the hyoid without releasing further attachment points that connect it throughout the entire body would give only temporary relief. Releasing the hyoid in the mouth only and claiming that it increases the sympathetic base only puts the horses body in a dichotomy. As it is not a true reflection of what may be happening in the rest of the body. There are ligaments that connect the hyoid to the upper cervical spine, knowing where to find them and how to deal with them is imperative to creating a full release. Understanding the connection of the hyoid to the Vago sympathetic trunk and its body wide affect cannot be over simplified especially when considering the sympathetic trunk. Releasing the hyoid without addressing the TMJ, the cranial vault and upper cervical spine is in effective. All of those structures are married and anastomosed together. In short here too the tensegrity model applies, you cannot relieve tension partially you cannot disengage compression partially. The entire body is affected through tension and compression it cannot be localized to only one spot. Glandular congestion and possible blockage can cause tissue congestion might require assistance beyond body work. So next time somebody tells you they are releasing the hyoid , ask yourself have they really considered all these factors?
