Where would you like to see an access point at Blue Mountain-Birch Cove Lakes? HRM is exploring trailheads for BMBCL. The survey asks about the proposed trailhe...ad as well as other future trailheads. Fill out the survey and help put the Regional Park on the map. Participate in our online survey regarding the development and potential impact of a future trailhead in Bedford West. This trailhead would provide access to th...e municipally-owned lands surrounding Hobsons Lake and Blue Mountain Birch Cove Lake Wilderness area. Information gathered through this survey will be incorporated into a report to Regional Council. Visit Halifax.ca/westbedfordtrailhead to learn more.

Trail Report! West Pine and Duck N Run area are GREAT for snowshoeing. Grab, beg or borrow a pair. Not only are snowshoes our national vehicle (we just made t...hat up), but packing trails with snowshoes will also set them up perfectly for fat bikes... (our second national vehicle. ditto). We encourage use of snowshoes versus postholing in boots, if you can find a pair. In deep snow, snowshoes are waaay more fun than snow-filled wet boots. Plus, snowshoes pack the trails into a magic white carpet that is just plain fun for everyone.

We're inviting residents to participate in a survey exploring future possibilities for a dog off-leash area in the vicinity of the Governor’s Brook subdivision ...in Spryfield. An assessment was completed to review five parks in the vicinity of the subdivision for their suitability for a dog off-leash area. As a result, two areas that are being considered are the community trail in MacIntosh Run Regional Park and the Roaches Pond Ball Diamond Park. Feedback from this survey will help inform a report returning to Regional Council with a recommendation on a dog off-leash area close to Governor’s Brook. For more information and to take the survey, visit www.shapeyourcityhalifax.ca/off-leash-governors-brook-subdi

A 2017 study predicted that if the monarch population drops below 30,000, the species will likely go extinct in the next few decades if nothing is done to save them. https://trib.al/qbXg9DK

Volunteers and crew have been taking advantage of the (mostly) warm late December to finish a few projects, including a rebuild of the creek and wetland crossin...g on the Attic. It's finished for Christmas! In 2017, MRWA volunteers built the rock tread, drainage field, rock 'bridge', and drop entrance at this spot (a huge job, pic from back then included!). However the rock bridge proved undersized for wet season flows, stuff needed work after a lot of use, and one exit was steeper than blue-square spec. Over the past couple weeks, we leveraged our earlier work in this rebuild. A proper bridge has been built, the rock work redone, and the south side drop rebuilt (lots of flat tires here lately..). A blue square ramp has been added on the north side, with the more challenging line of granite steps retained. Folks on bikes should, as always, scout out the changes before committing ;). The hand crushed granite is a bit loose, but it should bed in over time - and it will never be muddy. Thanks as always to hardworking MRWA volunteers and crew, and passers by - on foot and bike - who helped with rock work and carried lumber .

The hope is the tunnel will make for a healthier ecosystem for the animals to thrive in. Can’t wait to see more structure like this wildlife tunnel built in Nova Scotia! https://www.cbc.ca//new-deer-tunnel-under-highway-101-near

Right now is perhaps the most gorgeous time of year in the Purcells Cove Backlands. The swathes of huckleberry bushes are flaming red, their brilliance complime...nted by pops of yellow from changing birch leaves, and punctuated by the stark black trunks of burned Jack Pines. What lies in store for this globally rare ecosystem? Will Halifax Regional Municipality protect more of this stunning place, or allow further encroachment by development? The Backlands Coalition and Our HRM Alliance asked candidates running in District 11 (which covers much of the Backlands) what they would do to save the area, if they are elected. Listen to their answers in this recording of the candidates forum: https://www.facebook.com/watch/live/?v=341720980273028&ref=watch_permalink #HRM #NSpoli
