What a beautiful keepsake gift for the time spent living in Nova Scotia <3!

Gary George I asked Lesley to share this here because this glued barrel head has been kicking around for a full year in the shop, in the house and out in the sometimes heated Studio. It's been stable until a few weeks ago when it warped to almost a 1/2 inch deflection. The logo side crowned up because the more open grained back side lost it's relative humidity. Said another way, the under side dried out and shrunk. So I put it up on the bench, laid an old beach towel on the b...ack side and kept it damp for 2 days. The barrel head is perfectly straight again and should stay that way assuming I don't abuse it and allow it to dry out badly again. I posted this here because a few weeks back we received a complaint from a customer who had the same thing happen. It's one of the downsides of wood products. They can be sensitive to dramatic changes in temperature and humidity. The problem becomes somewhat more likely in reclaimed wood items like barrels or barn boards. These kinds of wood have had a full life in a harsh environment prior to our use of them. Predictability is a bit of voodoo with wood at the best of times. The winter is really tough on indoor wood furniture and similar. Preventative maintenance such as an oil or wax coating can deter warping and cracking. Household relative humidity plays a big role in keeping your furniture from acting up but sometimes it just happens. If you have any sort of wood maintenance questions feel free to ask.
