Bacon DW01

Last year I attended Deadfall at Angry Loner Ranch in Prince Edward County for the first time. Due to being set late in the year and ALR having terrible drainage and rough terrain, Deadfall is as much about being able to survive the elements for a weekend as it is about being able to beat the other team. I decided that I really liked this kind of airsoft event and I immediately began preparing for this years event, which was held this weekend.... That preparation required me to learn more about how to survive from a ruck in rough weather, camping with minimal shelter and supplies. It meant getting better cold and wet weather gear, since I was almost hypothermic a couple of times last year, and a better ruck. I wanted to play the sniper role for this years Deadfall so that meant spending countless Sundays crawling ever so carefully through the woods so that I would be good at sneaking into positions to make a shot without being seen or heard. It also meant many hours researching and building a ghillie hood and cape that would help me blend in. I also spent time camping, in cold and crappy weather, to figure out if my gear would work or not. Of course it also meant more rucking, and especially in the last few weeks, with ever heavier loads. All of which I did so I felt pretty confident about this Deadfall. Then I caught a cold right before the event which meant that an hour in, as we were marching into our base I started to feel really, really unwell. So unwell that I had to drop out of the event. I will choose to look at this as an opportunity to be better prepared for next year. This is how I looked just before we stepped off. I'm carrying a rocket launcher as part of our units equipment. The plan was to drop that at our base and then move out from there to look for the enemy.

So this was my loadout from a few weeks back before I stepped off with the team for an overnight ex in what would turn out to be a torrential rainstorm. I was testing my loadout for Deadfall to make sure it was workable. Surveying the field at Angry Loner Ranch a few weeks ahead of Op: Deadfall. The field was pretty badly flooded in a few spots which promised to make the event pretty miserable, which is the general idea behind Deadfall. Moments later I stepped in an ice water filled hole up past my knees. Nothing a like a boot full of cold water to make your day awesome....
