Broadwater Local History Moment: Did you know that the Broadwater was once the home of one of the founders of The National Geographic Society? From the home called Broadwater on Baddeck Bay, Ohio native George Kennan explored Baddeck’s flora and fauna. Kennan, an associate of the Bell Family, was an author, explorer, and noted expert on Russia. He arrived in Baddeck shortly after the Bells in the mid-1880s. ... Alexander Graham Bell described the property to Kennan at a dinner party the two were attending in Washington, D.C. According to writer Lilas Toward, by the time the party was over, Kennan had contacted owner Caroline Anderson and bought the property sight unseen. The land the home was built on was first deeded to shipping magnet Samuel Cunard, brother-in-law of James Duffus, the merchant who first settled on Kidston Island. Cunard built a house on the property that was incorporated into the house that followed. Kennan, along with thirty other men, was one of the founders of the National Geographic Society in 1888. Broadwater Local History Moment: Did you know the water speed record was set on the Baddeck Bay just a stone’s throw from the Broadwater Inn? Can’t get more local than that. The HD-4 was an early research hydrofoil watercraft developed by Alexander Graham Bell. It was designed and built at Bell's Beinn Bhreagh laboratory on the Baddeck Bay directly across the water from the Broadwater. In 1919 it set a world marine speed record of 70.86 miles per hour (114.04 km/h). Beneath the tranquil waters of the Baddeck Bay lies the Yankee swipe to see the Yankee in full form! The 100 ft schooner was originally built in 1897 by the Dutch. It was purchased by Capt. Walter Boudreau in 1949 and used as a round-the-world cruise business. The Yankee sank in 1955 in the Baddeck Bay.
