I wasn't in a particularly comic mood this week, so I thought I'd write to you instead. TLDR: If able bodied: Get our butts off the disabled/elder seating on transit systems even when it looks like nobody needs it. To me, the hardest part about trying to be conscious of social justice issues, isn't the hate I sometimes get, but the work of introspecting and listening to others when I've been problematic myself. The thoughtless self defense comes up faster than a call for a ...wall by an ill informed trumpster, save me from these thoughts that say I may not be the most woke of them all. Truth though, is that I scarcely am. I was hogging the seats for the disabled on transit systems, secure in my knowledge that I would with a quick scan of my eye discern if anyone else was more worthy of them and then if I spotted someone deemed deserving, with my 5 second xray vision, I would self righteously and condesceningly stand up and offer them my seat. It took my own battle with disability and pain to realize what a lot of bull crap that was. Even bulging biceps might be hiding strained tendons scarcely able to withstand the yanks and slides of inertia, my quick gaze isn't medically qualified to discern illnesses scarcely diagnosable by the most advanced medical equipment. I don't know who is on the second day of their menstrual period, pushing themselves to work despite terrible cramps, in this capitalistic society. So here's a thought, let's all dump the 5 second eye diagnosis. Why do I assume others do it too, cos I use transit a lot and I've observed those looking up from their cell phones to hurriedly offer their seat to someone deemed senior only to get a look which says, "I could take you down if I wanted to young man, keep your ass where it is, this lumber gets stronger with age. False and true positives. I get that sometimes a lot of seats are marked for the disabled and they are all empty, I get that we all need to make judgment calls, but I prod you to think, can we, if able bodied leave some of them for those who can judge for themselves that they aren't ? Can we if we really need to sit, do so, even ask for a seat without guilt, even if we don't use a wheelchair ? I'd love your thoughts, on this, as well as any art you've loved or hated so far.
