We often associate the problems we are experiencing as representing a truth about our identity, the identity of our relationships, or the identity of others. By seeing our problems as negative conclusions about who we are, it can further lead us to feeling stuck and hopeless. Through externalizing the problem your identity is viewed as separate from the problem. When the problem is no longer seen as part of who you are, it may offer a chance for a deeper exploration of your relationship with the problem, such as the influence of the problem on your work, friendships, and aspirations. This can lead to new possibilities to take action and to change the relationship you have with the problem.
