It’s official! Squamish artist James Harry’s captivating new public artwork, Xwemelch'stn, was unveiled at the Cineplex Cinemas at Park Royal in West Vancouver yesterday. We were there to witness incredible community support and a traditional blessing ceremony for both James and his artwork. The Squamish word for Fast Moving Water of Fish, Xwemelch'stn tells the story of the Capilano River, the salmon that swim up its waters, and the cycle of life they represent. The wo...rkcomprised of a metal sculpture and related vinyl window installationserves as a reminder to protect and give back to the life the land has given for thousands of years. We’re truly honoured to have worked with James in an art advisory role to help bring this important Squamish artwork and contribution to the community to life. Congratulations to James, his family, and the Squamish Nation!

Welcome to 2019! We are starting the new year by reflecting on the past. Sharing Myfanwy MacLeod’s 2017 sculpture The Lady which finds its home in North Vancouver’s Central Lonsdale, shedding light on a humorous and odd historical anecdote of British Columbia. In 1862 several camels were brought to the new colony of British Columbia from the US Army after their unsuccessful attempt to use them as pack animals in the Southwest to carry freight along the Gold Rush routes. A...n advertisment in the 1862 listed 25 camels for sale at a very low figure. However, reports soon revealed this experiment a failure due to the terrain and hostility between the camels and local animals. The camels were put to pasture with some managing to escape. The last sighting of a feral camel in British Columbia took place in the 1930’s. The last know surviving Cariboo camel, The Lady lived at a ranch in Grand Prairie British Columbia where she died around 1896. . What drew me to this choice of subject matter was the incongruity of an early photograph of a prospector astride a camel which is so out of keeping of my image of the Pacific Northwest. Even more compelling is the idea that not so long-ago feral camels were living in the wilds of British Columbia -so fantastic as to be almost unbelievable. Myfanway MacLeod . Myfanwy MacLeod (Vancouver) explores the overlapping and intersecting of pop culture, art history, and folk tradition. MacLeod draws parallels between how art and mass media are created, circulated, and consumed, articulating her findings with satirical wit. Her works, which range from photography and painting to large-scale installations and sculpture, examine how context and discourse can transform images, objects, or sounds, changing the way they resonate with individuals and in society. . #publicartvancouver #cagvancouver #vancouverartgallery #catrionajeffries #canadianart #natgallerycan #fineartsconcordia #belkinartgallery #cityofnorthvancouver #cbcnews #georgiastraight #myfanwymacleod #ballardfineart See more
