Between 1979-1985 alone, over 110,000 Vietnamese refugees who were fleeing a war torn country overrun by an repressive dictatorship, were resettled in Canada. Most had waited in refugees camps for several years across Asia before their resettlements were made possible. We still hear firsthand stories regularly from family who were stuck at sea, or from pilots who transported everyone from the refugee camps, or from the Canadian families that had opened their homes to resettle... refugees. So why do we celebrate Canada Day? Because without the direct sponsorship of tens of thousands Canadian families, Bamboo Chopsticks would not be here today, to celebrate a nation that exercises empathy, diversity and equality to the core, and to serve as a reminder to continue giving to a community that gives us back so much more.
