In the third and final video about the Huu-ay-aht First Nations (HFN) Watershed Renewal Project, #BMSCLive took the opportunity to ask HFN Lands and Marine Coordinator, Amelia Vos, a few questions about what her team does, the impacts of forestry practices on salmon habitat, and the challenges facing salmon on the BC coast. Amelia has worked for the Huu-ay-aht Nation for six years, and has a background in both the marine and fresh water commercial fishing industries. The #BMSCLive team were fortunate to join the Huu-ay-aht First Nations (HFN) salmon hatchery and stream survey team this fall, to learn about the HFN Watershed Renewal Project, working in part to enhance the local salmon populations. In this first video of a 3-part series, the #BMSCLive team was invited out to the Sugsaw Hatchery, to help record the number of returning salmon, and observe how the salmon hatchery program functions. We are so thankful to hear the announcement from Premier John Horgan and Huu-ay-aht Chief Councillor Robert J. Dennis Sr. that the province is partnering with Huu-ay-aht First Nations in support of a $30.7 million dollar investment to upgrade the Anacla/Bamfield Road. This project will be transformational for the BMSC and ensure that generations have the opportunity for safe passage to experience life-changing exploration and discovery in this beautiful environment. We would ...like to thank Minister Fraser and the many people who have worked together to help make Bamfield and Anacla a safer place to live while creating tremendous opportunities for the future of this community. This news also comes on the one year anniversary since the UVic bus tragedy. The BMSC continues to reflect on the passing of Emma Machado and John Geerdes and the countless students and families impacted.
